Wednesday, May 9 - 7:00pm Cu research for Children’s Cancer Ultimate Hike Information Session
Ultimate Hike for the Cure is an adventure on the Superior Hiking Trail and a fundraiser to help find a cure for children’s cancer. On August 24th you'll hike 32 miles in a day (half distance hikes available too). Through participation in Ultimate Hike for the Cure, you'll help Cure-Search find a cure for childhood cancer. This introductory clinic to mountaineering covers the process of learning to become a mountaineer. In this class, you will make and take home your own solar-cell phone charger! Learn the basics of capturing and using solar electricity in this ‘hands-on’ class. This is a unique opportunity to build and demonstrate your solar skills while building a durable solar-charger, usable with all types of cell phones. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is an exceptional place to sea kayak. The Apostles have sea caves, sand beaches, lighthouses and shipwrecks. Friday, May 18 - 7:00pm Hiking and Biking in the South of France
Join Rod and Sharon Johnson as they hike and bike in Provence, France. They hiked the Gorges of Verdon, called the Grand Canyon of Europe, and the Calanques on the Mediterranean. Learning how to effectively use a map and compass is one of the most overlooked wilderness skills. Whether you're navigating your way through the backcountry, attempting to locate the next portage or trying to get back to the car at a state park, knowing how use to a map and compass is important. Join Robert Quinn for an informative session on all around navigation. He'll also provide resources on Orienteering and Geocaching as well as scratch the surface of navigating with a GPS. Wednesday, May 23 - 7:00pm Born to Run (Maybe so, but 50 miles?)
54 year old bike commuter Steve Clark read Born to Run and decided to see for himself if Christopher McDougall’s insights were as truthful as they were exciting. Using Vibram KSOs he ran the 2012 Copper Canyon Ultra-marathon and found himself mostly side by side with the Raramuri (aka Tarahumara Indians) the entire race, beating many experienced ultra-runners, much younger than himself, even though he ran with a broken toe.
