$5,000 Grant available to an environmental or wilderness cause - proposal due by July 31, 2014 (deadline has been extended)
 
Midwest Mountaineering dedicates 10% of its pre-tax profits to environmental and wilderness causes. Customers vote on which group is to be  awarded the grant.  Submit a proposal for your group by sending a paragraph description of your organization and a paragraph description of a specific project that this money will be used for.  Send your grant proposal to [email protected] by July 31st.  
 
If you know of a group or cause that you believe deserves this grant, let them know that proposals should be sent to [email protected] by July 31, 2014.  Midwest will narrow the field to three proposals and you, our customers will vote for the final recipient of this grant. 
BIC One Design SUP Challenge is Wednesday, June 25 5-7:30 pm - Fun Standup Paddleboard race
 
BIC challengeThe concept for the BIC SUP One Design Challenge is simple – Participants paddle around a short race course, all using the same BIC SUP 12’6 WING board, which event organizers provide for participants to use.  Top finishers advance to a finals and a winner is crowned, but for newbies the real accomplishment lies in the journey, not the podium.

Top finishers advance to a finals and a winner is crowned, but for newbies the real accomplishment lies in the journey, not the podium.  On top of the fitness, fun and socializing, all participants are entered into a drawing to win a 12’6" WING from BIC Sport, the same stable, user-friendly board used for the races.  At Lake Nokomis near the northwest beach. 

The $30 event fee includes the board, paddle, etc. – just show up ready for fun and competition!  All skill levels welcome.  Pre-registration required.  612–339–3433

Want to put in some practice before race day?  Boards are available for rent ($30.00) 7 days a week.

 With our beautiful new floor upstairs in Thrifty Outfitters we thought we might just have a great space for yoga. And so we tried a yoga class with our first Outdoor Diva Night.  We were thrilled when about twenty-five women joined Andy Lear, a former Midwest Mountaineering employee, instructor, and shared a 45 minute class in our new space. 
 
 
 
 
 We now have a series of free Saturday morning yoga classes, . Classes are 45 minutes long, and begin at 8:15.  Enter through the back parking lot door; a manager will be here early,  from 8am to let you in.  Please arrive between 8:00 to 8:15 .   Bring your mat and water bottle, and we'll see you Saturday morning - Namaste!

 Climb 4 Kidney Cancer - 2nd Annual Stair Climb - Thursday, July 19
 
This is an exciting and challenging race/climb up and down every stair of TCF Bank Stadium . The 5893 stairs and 3570 feet of elevation change make it by far the biggest stair climb event in the world and a serious challenge even to the fittest athletes. Organizers expect more than a thousand participants of all ages to take part in this event aimed at both serious athletes and families alike.
 
This event, at beautiful TCF stadium, is organized in support of Kidney Cancer research, raising awareness and funds for cancer research through a combination of stair climbing, rock climbing and mountain climbing events. All of the proceeds from this event will go to University of Minnesota Medical Foundation to fund kidney cancer research.  - Race or just participate to meet personal fitness goals - here's more info :

Learning how to effectively use a map and compass is one of the most overlooked wilderness skills.  Whether you're navigating your way through the backcountry, attempting to locate the next portage or trying to get back to the car at a state park, knowing how use to a map and compass is important. Join Robert Quinn for an informative session on all around navigation.  He'll also provide resources on Orienteering and Geocaching as well as scratch the surface of navigating with a GPS.
