Boulder Nordic Sport Midwest Updates

BNS will be hosting another free on-snow demo at Hyland Lake Park this Saturday, December 27th. We will have our full lineup of Madshus RED Line skate and classic skis as well as racing boots from Alpina and Madshus. Come to the demo to try before you buy and get 10% off a new pair of our hand-selected, expertly-fit race skis.

The recent weather and snow conditions can present some challenges for ski preparation. We are testing kick waxes and have found some great options, including Ski*Go HF Violet, Guru Extreme Hallgeir, and Start Oslo Purple. Stop by our shop at 90th and Penn in Bloomington to pick up some of these waxes which are specifically formulated for man-made snow. We can mark your kick zones on our ski flex tester and give you tips on adjusting your wax application to dial in perfect kick.

For glide wax, it’s important to note that man-made snow is very abrasive and very dirty. You may notice that your skis feel fast early on but slow down significantly, even after only a few km. This is because your skis are picking up dirt and because the abrasive crystals are drying out your bases. There are a few waxing techniques you can use to help combat this. It’s important to start with a clean base: Hot-scrape your skis using a warm paraffin – anything yellow or red. Next, harden your base with a black paraffin like Ski*Go LF Graphite or Holmenkol Matrix Black/Blue. The graphite and moly additives resist dirt and create a harder surface to combat sharp man-made crystals. Make sure your wax of the day is a fluoro to (broken record time) resist dirt and add durability in the abrasive snow. Ski*Go LF Violet is a great choice and also economical for a fluoro glider.

Call or stop in the shop for advice. We like to help simplify the process and we offer wax lines that make decision-making easy for both kick and glide.

BNS mobile race service will be on site at the US National Championships in Houghton, MI from January 1-10. We will be testing waxes and grinds and offering recommendations throughout the championships. We will have our full selection of race waxes and waxing tools and accessories on hand for purchase. Stop by the trailer for advice or just to say hi!

We look forward to seeing you on the trails or in the shop soon. Thanks for making our first winter in Minneapolis a great one!
