BNS Waxing Observations

The following are some notes that we have gleaned out of testing waxes from the first three months of ski season country wide. Please let us know if you have any questions on this.

BNS will be on-site at the Noquemanon in Marquette this weekend, or you can stop by our shop in Bloomington at 90th and Penn.

In cold conditions we have found that SkiGo Pink Paper can make as much difference as putting topcoats on skis. This sounds completely crazy but testing has shown it to be true. Pink Paper should be used when temps are below 10F. It is a 3 Micron super fine finishing paper and it essentially knocks down all structures and makes the glide surface super smooth. The paper should be worked back and forth down the skis a couple times and then finished in the direction of travel twice. Use as a LAST step after all waxing. Each sheet of paper can be used for up to three pair of skis. Refill packs are available.

When new snow is falling and temps are below 20F it is always worth testing Holmenkol Race Powder Mid. This is the former Mid 08 Powder and it excels below its listed range in new falling or fresh snow down to -8F at times. We had this powder win literally every test we ran at US Nationals in Houghton, MI to start the year. This has also been a favorite at the American Birkiebeiner the last few years. It seems to be a condition wax and not a temperature specific wax.

SkiGo C22 block continues to be a must test in all conditions. We had this wax win tests that were done below 0F at Nationals when it absolutely should not have won. C22 block never slows skis down and for someone looking for a universal fluoro block to keep it simple, this is the one you want. Every parent or coach should have this in the box.

Guru Green and SkiGo XC Green are amazing kick waxes when you are dealing with cold snow that has not transformed fully. These two waxes are dead on with speed and solid kick in conditions below 15F and not fully transformed snow. You want these in your wax box for cold days. They can both be covered by a wax such as Rode Alaska or Special Green as well.

SkiGo LF Graphite continues to make a large difference in nearly all conditions. People started to doubt this a year or two ago and so we started testing again in earnest and there are no conditions where this stuff is slowing down the skis. Often it is a massive increase in durability and hardening of the base. One thing that is clear is you must use a good horsehair brush in the process of brushing it out or else you leave some behind. The Holmenkol is our favorite by far. Continue to use LF Graphite as a first layer in all critical wax situations and you will love the results.
