FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hyland Wax Reports
We were able to get out the last few days to do some wax testing at Hyland Park on the 1.8k man made loop, and we thought you might be interested in our notes. We started testing on Friday morning and tested kick through the weekend. Some of these results may not be applicable for the next ten days, but may be useful later in the year as conditions stabilize and hopefully become colder. Here are my notes from the testing...
Glide Testing
12/4 Friday 7AM-8:30AM – 25F, tracks had dried and firmed overnight
Glide – in order with the best glide at the top
1. Ski*Go HF Red
2. Holmenkol Racing Mix Mid
3. Holmenkol Matrix Black/Yellow
Also tested Ski*Go HF Orange, Ski*Go HF Yellow, Ski*Go HF Orange/Green, Ski *Go HFP16, Holmenkol Racing Mix Wet
Notes – Ski*Go HF Red is a wax specifically made for man-made snow. It comes in an LF and XC version, giving the same condition specific wax at less cost. This is the same with all the Ski*Go HF waxes. Ski*Go HF Red has a max temp. of +1, probably making it a little too hard for the wet tracks for the next week, but keep it in mind for other times later in the winter. We did not test glide at any other time throughout the weekend, my guess is that Ski*Go HF, LF, XC Yellow (the old Ski*Go C242 wax) would be a good choice for the warmer temps now.
Kick Testing
12/4 Friday 7AM – 8:30AM 25F, hard tracks that had dried and firmed overnight, tested 4 klisters and 4 hardwaxes
Klister – all with a Rode Special Violet base layer-
1. Rode Multigrade Klister – draggy
2. Rode Special Violet – mediocre kick, draggy
3. Guru Extreme 39 Hard – excellent kick, good glide
4. Rex Gold – mediocre kick, draggy
Hardwax – all with a Vauhti Superbase base layer
1. Rode Multigrade Violet – no kick
2. Guru Ext. Hallgier – no kick
3. Start Oslo Blue – ok kick, draggy
4. Holmenkol Blue Spezial – good kick, good glide
12/5 Saturday 9AM 40F deteriorated tracks, retested klister skis -
1. Rex Gold – good kick, good glide
2. Rode Multigrade – mediocre kick, draggy
3. Rode Special Violet – no kick
4. Guru Extreme 39 Hard – no kick
5. Start Oslo Blue Hardwax – no kick
12/6 Sun 7AM – 9AM 35-40F wet, coarse tracks-
1. Swix Silver Uni mixed with Swix KX45 (Violet Klister) – excellent kick and glide
2. Rex Gold – no kick
3. Guru Extreme 39 Hard – no kick
4. Start Oslo Blue Hardwax – no kick
Notes – Over the three days of testing the tracks changed considerably. Friday morning the kick was tricky, my guess is that a thin layer of Guru Extreme 39 Hard covered with Holmenkol Blue Spezial would have been a good solution. Blue Spezial can often work in conditions where other blue hard waxes will not, and Guru Extreme 39 Hard can often be a good choice when the snow is ‘in-between’ where neither hardwax or klister seem to work well. Keep this combination in mind for later races at Hyland. On Saturday the snow had transformed enough in the warmer temps that Rex Gold was working great. By Sunday morning a softer wax was needed and the Swix combo did the trick, going forward a red klister mixed with uni might be better especially if the rain materializes tomorrow. My guess is that we have seen the last of hardwax conditions for a number of days ahead.
