  • Assistant Nordic Coach: St. Paul Academy and Summy School (St. Paul, MN):
    Nordic Varsity Assistant Coaching position available at St. Paul Academy and Summit School for the 2015-2016 ski season. This coach will work with varsity skiers on speed and technique and should be available from 3 to 6 days/week. Varsity practices run from 3:20 to 5:30 pm M-F with additional Saturday morning practices during most of the season. The team competes in the IMAC conference and usually practices at Como and Battle Creek. The season runs from Nov. 7 through mid-February. SPA is located near Macalester College in St. Paul.   • Development Director: American Birkebeiner (Hayward, WI):
    This position is responsible for facets of fundraising, membership, outreach, sustainer programs, honor wall, and grant submissions. The DD must be self-motivated, outgoing, organized and structured. A passion for sport and a strong team player is critical.

  • Assistant Nordic Coach: Armstrong High School (Plymouth, MN):
    Duties: Help coach both the J.V. and Varsity skiers for weekly practices and races. Dates/Times needed: November 10 through February 12th from 3:00 - 5:30 p.m. Monday - Friday and some Saturday morning practices and races.     The Ride and Glide Ski Club is looking for experienced coaches to teach classic and skating techniques at our two venues (Lake Elmo and Elm Creek) this winter. The commitment is to coach on Tuesday evenings from early November until the end of February.

  • Part-time Nordic Assistant Director: Snow Mountain Ranch (Granby, CO):
    Snow Mountain Ranch YMCA (near Winter Park, CO) has a world class Nordic Center at 8750 elevation with over 100km of groomed trails near the continental divide. Support a healthy spirit, mind, and body! Working with the Nordic Director, you'll train, schedule, and supervise Nordic Center staff and volunteers, scheduling ski lessons as well as on demand events, maintain inventory control, and supervise daily shop operations. Position is October to April. Pay is hourly DOE, plus all meals, lodging, internet, YMCA of the Rockies membership (including free access to major Colorado ski resorts on your days off) is included. We have zero tolerance for drugs (including marijuana), whether on- or off-duty.

  • Nordic Center Worker: Snow Mountain Ranch (Granby, CO):
    Snow Mountain Ranch YMCA (near Winter Park, CO) has a world class Nordic Center at 8750 elevation near the continental divide. Support a healthy spirit, mind, and body! You'll work in our Nordic Center shop, running the cash register, assisting with rentals, waxing skis, and teaching classic and/or skate skiing on our 100km of classic/skate trails. Pay is $180/week in addition to all meals, lodging, YMCA of the Rockies membership (including free access to major Colorado ski resorts on your days off) is included. We have zero tolerance for drugs (including marijuana), whether on- or off-duty.

  • Groomer/Snowmobile Operator : Snow Mountain Ranch (Granby, CO):
    Snow Mountain Ranch YMCA has a world class Nordic Center at 8750 elevation near the continental divide. Support a healthy spirit, mind, and body! You'll use a Piston Bully and snowmobiles to groom over 100km of classic/skate, snowshoe, and fat tire trails.     Chanhassen-Chaska is searching for a female Assistant Nordic ski coach with collegiate or masters competition experience. Join a collegial, competitive, and well supported Nordic program. Chanhassen and Chaska high schools promote academic excellence and provide excellent support for the Nordic program. The season begins one week before the State High School Season and ends with the State High School Nordic Ski Championships.     The ISD 196 Nordic Ski team (Eagan, Eastview, Rosemount, & Apple Valley High Schools -Minnesota) is seeking applicants for 2 Asst. Coaching positions (Girls Varsity & JV; Boys Varsity & JV). A minimum of 3-years of racing experience or 1-year of coaching experience is required. This 5-6 day/week position runs from mid-November thru mid-February with practices and meets typically scheduled between 3:00-5:30 PM.   • Assistant Nordic Coach: Bloomington Nordic Ski Team (Bloomington, MN):
    The Bloomington Nordic Ski Team has a boys and girls assistant coaching position open for the 2015-2016 ski season. Dryland training starts Nov. 9th and will be conducted at Jefferson High School or Hyland Park Reserve. On snow practices occur mainly at Hyland Park Reserve. Practices run from 3:30-5:00 every weekday and on occasional Saturday mornings. Our team size ranges from 30-40 enthusiastic skiers. Responsibilities will include after school practices and ski meets. Applicants with some ski experience in both classic and skate technique are encouraged to apply. Daniel Johnson, heavily involved in western Wisconsin cycling, as well as ski grooming and volunteering at the Birkie, passed away earlier this month. There will be a memorial service next Saturday, Aug 29th, in Frederic, WI.

Walter Spidahl Passes On
March 15, 2015
Walter Spidahl, skiing pioneer in western Minnesota, passed away last week. Walt was the founder of Spidahl Ski Gaard trail system, worked for Northland Ski Company, was president of the Fergus Falls Ski Club, and helped open Hallaway Hill ski area near Pelican Rapids in the 1950s.

Norm Oakvik, Minnesota Nordic Pioneer, Passes Away
February 4, 2015
Norm Oakvik, one of the true pioneers of Nordic skiing in Minnesota, passed away on Tuesday. Oakvik was a founding member of the North Star Ski Touring Club, for a time sold imported Nordic skis out of his house before the industry took off, and coached Junior National teams, as well as the University of Minnesota. He was given the lifetime achievement award by MNSA, and has had trails named in his honor at Theodore Wirth. No plans for a memorial service at this time.

Obituary: John Burton

The Star Tribune published a long obituary for John Burton, recapping his career and family. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Dec 27th, 11 am, at Plymouth Congressional Church in Minneapolis.

Olympian John Burton passed away on Friday, he was 91 years old. Burton competed in the 1952 Olympics, and was still racing in the Twin Cities as recently as the 2000s, including the 2006 City of Lakes Loppet tour.
Update:  There will be a memorial service at 11:00 on Saturday, December 27th at Plymouth Congregational Church, 1900 Nicollet Avenue, Minneapolis.

Cycling Innovator Steve Hed Passes Away

Steve Hed, founder of Hed Cycling, passed away on Tuesday. Hed developed groundbreaking designs in bicycle wheel designs, building the company into a major international brand while remaining based out of the Twin Cities. No details yet on funeral services.

Dave Nelson, a huge supporter of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation who worked extensively on the trail network passed away Wednesday morning. Details on arrangements pending. Updated with funeral arrangements and memorial funds.
