Metro Boston's Leo J Martin Ski Track (LJM), managed by the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR), seeks a Director of Ski Operations. The position is a 6-month seasonal position, with potential future opportunities for year-round employment. The LJM Director of Ski Operations will plan, coordinate, and direct the operations of the cross-country ski track including snowmaking, grooming, race course set-up, coordination with user groups, marketing and community outreach, and special events. Located just outside Boston in the suburb of Weston, MA, LJM is one of the busiest cross country ski areas in the country. The facility is home to: Cambridge Sports Union (CSU); Harvard's ski team; the largest youth ski program in New England (Eastern Mass Bill Koch); youth programs through Boston Youth Enrichment Services (YES) and the Boys & Girls Club; adaptive ski programs; and more than a dozen high school cross-country ski teams. LJMs 15km trail system has long featured extensive snowmaking as well as lighting for night-time skiing. Over the past year substantial additional investments have been made in snowmaking, grooming, and lighting. Sad news from the Northland: John Harju, son of Erkki Harju, passed away suddenly on Monday, January 9th in Two Harbors. Vistation scheduled for Friday evening with funeral service Saturday afternoon in Two Harbors.
John Holmquist Passes Away

North Star Ski Touring Club legend John Holmquist passes last Saturday, Nov 19th. Holmquist was a Birkie founder and in 2012 won the Tim Knopp award for his dedication to both Nordic skiing and the club.
Jean Cecil Passes On

Jean Cecil, one of the founders of BJ's Ski Shop and mother to Birkie champion Lynne Cecil, passed away last week. Cecil was well known in the cycling and Nordic skiing communities, and helped in the development of the Minnesota Youth Ski League.
Joe Nowak Passes Away

Longtime Cloquet Nordic ski coach Joe Nowak passed away on Thursday evening. Nowak was considered the founder of Pine Valley and coached many state championship teams for Cloquet. He was elected to the Minnesota Nordic Ski Coaches Hall of Fame in 1978. A complete obituary with details of services should be published on Sunday.

At the CXC/USSA Wayne Fish Coaches Conference last weekend, the Chairman's Awards were presented, honoring some big contributions by individuals from the Midwest. The Igor Badamshin Coach of the Year award went to NMU's Sten Fjeldheim, Craig Jarvinen was named volunteer of the year, John Hugus Leadership award went to the Loppet's John Munger, and Dennis Kruse was recognized with the Tony Wise Lifetime Achievement Award.
Osseo Coach Brad Rosch Passes Away

Breaking news Tuesday evening, long-time Osseo high school Nordic coach Brad Rosch suffered a heart attack on Saturday and passed away Tuesday afternoon. Rosch lead a number of squads to the State Meet and helped develop many great skiers including Matt Liebsch and Sarah Bezdicek. Services will be Tuesday morning, Oct 4th at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, with a celebration of life ceremony 3 pm at Elm Creek.

Deb Ernst, active member of the Green Bay area silent sports community, and wife and partner to InCompetition's Mark Ernst, passed away on Tuesday, May 3rd. There will be a memorial service Saturday May 7th, at Saint Louis Church in Dykesville.
MNSA Lifetime Achievement Awards Program Coverage

A big turnout Saturday afternoon at the Vasaloppet Nordic Center for the MNSA Lifetime Achievement Awards Program. Jessie Diggins was the guest speaker and kicked the program off with a presentation on her racing career and all the people and organizations that helped make her so successful. Past Lifetime Achievement awardees were recognized, then Bob Montebello, currently the oldest active ski trail groomer in North America, was honored as the 2016 award winner. The afternoon wrapped up with posthumous recognition of 12 great heroes in Minnesota skiing history: Nikolai Anikin, Robin Baker, Charlie Banks, John Burton, Earle Dickinson, Tim Knopp, Jinny McWethy, Brother Jerome Rademacher, Toni St. Pierre, Al Waverek, and Don Wolter.
