U.S. Biathlon World Team Trials
Lake Placid, NY --
With over a foot of new fallen snow in the past 48 hours, the conditions were
perfect for the first of three races at the Mt. Van Hoevenberg Biathlon venue
in Lake Placid, NY. Over 100 athletes from the U.S. and Canada competed in
today's Sprint competition including several from Minnesota. In the Sr.
Men's field (over age 20), Andy Erickson drew the first starting position,
which proved to be an ideal position with trail conditions softening as the
race progressed. Erickson a 1998 Olympian shot 'clean' (10 for 10) to take
4th place. Ryan Cameron of Minneapolis missed only one in his first shooting
stage to finish in 10th place. Hastings' Dan Campbell struggled in the range
hitting only 2 out of 10 targets, but turned in one of the day's fastest ski
times to finish in 17th place. In the Jr. Men's field, Steve Scott of St.
Paul finished in 4th place after missing all 5 targets in his final shooting
stage.
In the Sr. Women's field, Kara Salmela of Duluth fought through softening
snow conditions to finish in 3rd place with 7 of 10 shooting. "Finishing 3rd
today was good because I really didn't feel that great during the race. I'm
really looking forward to the next two races", said Salmela. Finishing only
16 seconds behind Salmela was Jill Krause of St. Cloud, who was clean through
her first stage, but had two misses in the standing position. In the Jr.
Women's field, BethAnn Ellingson of Grand Rapids skied to a 2nd place finish
edging out Annelies Cook of Saranac Lake, NY.
Tomorrow will be the Pursuit Format, which includes four shooting stages
(prone, prone, standing, standing). The World Team Trials will conclude this
Friday after another Sprint race.
