US Biathlon Association Announces Olympic Team Nominees
The US Biathlon Association submitted the following list of athletes as
nominees to the
2002 US Olympic Biathlon Team which will compete in the Olympic Winter Games
in salt Lake City in February.
Men
Lawton Redman Florence, VT
Jay Hakkinen Kasilof, AK
Jeremy Teela Anchorage, AK
Dan Campbell Hastings, MN
Women
Rachel Steer Anchorage, AK
Kara Salmela Duluth, MN
Andrea Nahrgang Wayzata, MN
Kristina Sabasteanski Standish, ME
The towns listed with the athletes are the hometowns. The team will be
coached by Algis Shalna of Williston,VT and the assistant will be Randy Hill
of Heber City, UT.
Redman is a member of the US Biathlon National Team and won 2 of the 4
races at the trials. Hakkinen, is a member of the US Biathlon National Team,
won 1 of the trials races and is a veteran of the 1998 Nagano Games. Jeremy
Teela is a member of the US Biathlon Team, won 1 of the Trials races and was
9th in the 2001 world Biathlon Championships Sprint. Campbell competes for
Minnesota Biathlon and was a member of the Junior National Team in the late
90's
Rachel Steer is a member of the US Biathlon Team and is the top
ranked US female biathlete for the last 3 years. Kara Salmela, a 1998
Olympian competes for Duluth Biathlon, and won a silver medal at the 2001
World Military Championships Biathlon. Andrea Nahrgang is a member of the US
Biathlon Team and won 1 of the Trials races. Kristina Sabasteanski is a
member of the US Biathlon Team and a 1998 Olympian.
The above athletes will travel to Germany Saturday for 2 World
Cup Biathlon in Oberhof and Ruhpolding as preparation for the Olympic Winter
Games. They will return in late January to Utah for final Games preparations.
