Skinnyski.com High School Rankings - Final

February 6, 2015

Commentary:

Two step process here...  Final rankings, and then the State Meet Preview next week.  Yes, the two are different:  one ranks based on the performance of skiers to date, the other attempts to predict how those skiers will perform at the State Meet.  Zak Ketterson is the perfect example.  He's still the best of the Minnesota (and Midwest) crew, but as he is overseas racing in the U18 Nations Cup this weekend, and his team didn't qualify for the State Meet, Ketterson will not be crowned the 2015 State champion.  Nicole Schneider is in almost the same boat.  Schneider is on the same trip as Ketterson, representing the US against some of the best 17-18 skiers in the world.   But Schneider is expected to return for the State Meet, as her team (Wayzata) qualified.   Schneider remains our number one pick, which she helped cement in winning her conference championship over Anna French and Michaela Keller-Miller in convincing fashion.

The contenders: Rocci Wohlk has been on fire lately, upping her consistency in recent weeks and winning in dominating form.  Anna French and Michaela Keller-Miller continue to ski strongly.  Leo Hipp just keeps winning, frequently against some very tough competition (including his own teammates).  Tamer Mische-Richter is right there as well, maybe not attracting as much spotlight but definitely on par with Hipp.  We shuffle the rest of the ranks based on some of the section results and how we feel they might be peaking.   Overall, both the boys and girls top 10-15 remains a highly competitive bunch, and you could lose a lot of money trying to pick the trifecta.

The team rankings get one last snowglobe shake.  Forest Lake boys drop a notch, which is a lot of speculation as they recently announced one of their top four, Tommy Babcock, is no longer participating with the team.  Was their victory over Stillwater at sections one of those "Miracle on Ice" moments, or can the entire team up their game for the State Meet?  The Stillwater girls continue to impress with such a rock solid stable of skiers - they almost switch off the role of top skier on a rotating basis!  Outside of the top four teams, its a real dogfight for the remaining positions.

That's our final take on the rankings for this season...  watch for the State Meet Preview next Tuesday.

Sidenotes:  Checkout a neat story of sportsmanship during the recent conference championships.
