Action Alert: Minnesota Ski Pass Price Increase Proposal
April 25, 2017
Minnesota Nordic Ski Association is encouraging all Minnesota skiers to press for legislative action to increase funding for Grant-in-Aid grooming by increasing the pricing on the Minnesota Ski Pass.

Olympic Caliber Ski Jump Proposed for SE Minnesota

Plans for a 120 meter Olympic sized large hill ski jump at the Mt. Frontenac Golf Course, south of Red Wing, are moving forward after zoning and a permit approvals last week.

Possible Olympic Skiing Complex for Madison Area

CXC is working with officials from Middleton, Wisconsin, on a proposal to develop an Olympic cross-country skiing complex including lighted ski and rollerski trails, biathlon range, and even a year-round "snowmaking barn".

Como Winter Sports Booster Club Fundraising Dinner March 25th

Como Winter Sports Booster Club is hosting a fundraising dinner on March 25th to help raise funds to support the cross country and downhill/snowboard lessons programs at Como Park in St. Paul. Ward 5 council member Amy Brendmoen and Mike Hahm, director of Parks and Rec, will be there and there will be a chance lobby them with regard to the future of XC ski in Como Park. There is also a silent auction with donations from Finn Sisu.

Tour Duluth Set for this Weekend

The annual Tour Duluth event is this Saturday, March 4th. Tour Duluth is a celebration of the great ski trails in Duluth and all the great people who make it all happen, with skiers visiting a number of Duluth area trails throughout the day. Food and drink are at each of the tour stops with the annual DXC dinner that night.

Sugar Tour on March 11th

The Sugarbush trail system is encouraging all skiers to come out and enjoy spring skiing with a special Sugar Tour event planned for Saturday, March 11th. Children and adults can choose 5k, 8k or an 18k loop, with activities on the shorter loops or the personal challenge of skiing the long loop with treats and hot chocolate when you finish at Oberg Trailhead. Register online or in-person.

Duluth XC Announces Snow Ball Gala and Community Ski Awards

Duluth XC (DXC) is hosting their second annual Snow Ball Gala, Feb 11th at Greysolon Ballroom in Duluth. Proceeds will the Capital Campaign of building new ski trails with snowmaking at the Grand Avenue Nordic Center at the bottom of Spirit Mountain.

Birkie Trail Named Top Ski Destination

The American Birkebeiner Trail was named the number one cross-country ski destination in the nation, as voted by USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice travel award contest. Separately, the American Birkebeiner ski race was recently awarded the 2016 Champions of Economic Impact in Sports Tourism.

Major Winter Storm Taking Aim on Minnesota for the Weekend

Winter Storm Watches and even some Blizzard Watches were going up Wednesday as forecasters gain confidence in a major winter storm rolling in for northern Minnesota this weekend. As of Wednesday afternoon, the biggest snowbelt was targeted across west Central to NE Minnesota with a big band of 6-12" by Saturday morning.

Frozen Thunder: Canmore Opens Snow Loop
October 23, 2016
Over the weekend, Canmore Nordic Center in Alberta, Canada, opened their fall snow loop which will be used for the Frozen Thunder events later this week. The loop is created from snow harvested last season and kept undercover over the summer. The first race is this Friday, Oct 28th, and will cover 7.5K freestyle for the women and 10K for the men. The following Tuesday and Thursday will be sprint events.

Mpls Park Board, Loppet Foundation Celebrate beginning of a new era of outdoor recreation and programming

On Wednesday, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and the Loppet Foundation confirmed a shared commitment to world-class outdoor recreation and programming at Theodore Wirth Regional Park. MPRB Commissioners approved three agreements that facilitate the construction, donation, lease and operation of a new outdoor recreation hub in Wirth Park.

Braemer Skiing Petition

The City of Edina is proposing a 3 km cross country ski trail with snowmaking to be built at Braemar Park. The trails would provide an additional venue with guaranteed snow for the public and ski teams. Backers are asking the cross country ski community at large as well as Edina residents to voice their support before the public hearing on Sep 7th by signing their online petition.

Loppet Passes Another Hurdle Toward Adventure Center Development
August 5, 2016
The Administration and Finance Committee of the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board Wednesday night passed a series of resolutions supporting the Loppet Foundation's Adventure & Welcome Center project. The next hurdle is approval by the full Park Board, which is expected to vote later this month. Assuming approval by the full board, the last big hurdle is fundraising of an additional $1.2 million to complete the first phase of the project. As a side note, the Adventure Center has been rechristened as 'The Trailhead'.

Duluth Planning Commission Hearing on Grand Avenue Nordic Center

The City of Duluth Planning Commission will be holding a Public Hearing this Tuesday evening, July 12th, to receive comments on the Spirit Mountain Recreation Area Environmental Assessment Worksheet, which addresses projects including the Grand Avenue Nordic Center, as well as a number of other silent sport efforts.

Levis Mound Chalet Burns Down
May 26, 2016
The scenic chalet at Levis Mound near Neillsville, WI, burned down in a fire earlier this week. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. However, plans are already being made to build a replacement and a funding page has been started.

Battle Creek Winter Recreation Legislative Update
May 12, 2016
The Battle Creek Winter Recreation Area was not included in the final Senate bonding bill. Supporters have now turned their attention to a Senate Supplemental Budget Bill and a project called Snow Angels, which funds a ski jump in Red Wing. They hope to get the Battle Creek project added to this same bill, and are asking for constituents to contact their representatives.
