    • Dec 16 - Battle Creek Regional Park West (Saint Paul):

      Conditions: Okay for skating.
The entire 5km loop was groomed for skating this afternoon. The result is a mostly very skiable surface with shallow corduroy that at 4:30 was soft enough to get a good edge. The detractors are some bare areas and some isolated icy patches as a result of standing water below the snow surface. There is also a fair amount of tree debris and some dirt on the top of the snow. The damage that was done by inconsiderate skiers and walkers is minimal. All of the detractors are easily avoidable. I skated the entire loop including the two big downhills with no problem. The underlying surface of the trail is quite smooth now and as a result of the grooming that was done Friday, the trails survived the rain much more intact than you might expect. Bring your "B" skis and positive attitude and you can enjoy some pretty good skiing. Classic tracks are beyond repair for now.
