Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 24    Month: Feb | Jan | Dec | Nov
Thursday, February 18, 2016
Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Still skiable for skate and classic, signs of recent grooming.
The full course is still open with some sidestepping of bare ground. Skate deck varies from good to icy and thin; tracks are good for about half the course. The only real hazard is the cart path to the Tee 6 on the NE corner of the course; the thin ice bridge will be gone shortly.

Grooming
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Ungroomed with a lot of ice.
Until we get more snow we will not be able to groom the very thin base out there. Much of the trail is glare ice so please be careful.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Poor. Icy. Needs to be groomed.
Just went at 2:30 pm. Really can't skate, all ice, no edge. Turned around. Bummer.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Hard packed and icy skate lane; decent tracks for about 2K.
Skated this morning in very challenging conditions. The city did scratch it up yesterday, but yesterday's traffic left it uneven and hard to ski. The tracks are in pretty good shape with fresh snow blowing in. Where the tracks bottom out, there is usually a good, skied-in alternative.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Mostly very good; a few grassy spots poking through.
Skate deck was consistently very good this morning, with the exception being the few spots where the trail goes up over a tee box, and grass pokes through at the edges. Classic tracks disappeared or were thin in in the same spots and on a few corners, but overall looked good.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Poor for skating and classic.
There still is decent coverage, thanks in part to the groomer's occasional widenings. Even the tracks were about half good. It was icy, but the ice was white, even in the tracks. So, if we can survive the weekend.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Mostly good to very good.
Skated the classic tracks today at about 10 am and was pleasantly surprised at how well they are holding up. Saw the groomer while I was out -- big shout out to St. Paul Parks and Rec for the excellent job they've done trying to keep the course skiable. First 1/4 mile is icy with lots of grass but don't be discouraged -- conditions improve at the top of the first small hill and are good the rest of the trail.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Thin skate deck, patchy tracks, but still very skiable.

Wednesday, January 20, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Decent skate deck, classic tracks are skiable, but wearing down.
Skate deck was a dusting of new snow on top of a solid deck. It felt a bit icy under the ungroomed powder at times, and a few dark spots indicate some grass poking through, but it was fine skiing. Classic tracks were surprisingly consistent, though areas have significant grass showing through, even with the new dusting of snow.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Very good. Classic ski track was in surprisingly good condition given our paucity of snow. Trail breaks up a few times and there's a little grass, but easily the best I've seen in two years.
