Notes:   Some of the best trails in southern Minnesota. Tucked in the valley behind the school, the trails run around the northern slopes of the valley making them quite challenging and also well protected from the sun. Some lighted sections, and snowmaking operations.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Partial, B skis ]
There is skiing at SMU. We groomed approx. a 4+K loop. The loop starts at the Yons Trail Head. The 1K hill is approached using the inner loops to the right of the orchard. We have only groomed to the second cutoff. The remainder of the main loop is good to far south end. Take the hard right before the downhill and ski back across the sledding hill to Yons. The skate deck on this loop is very good with some icy areas. The classic track in some areas is good, but in many areas it is gone and can't be reset. The three large hills on the south end of the system have been groomed. We did not groom: Rattlesnake, Upper, River Trail and any sections south facing that are very icy. If skiers stay where we have groomed the trails are safe; outside of the groomed areas there is considerable ice.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
We groomed the main loop this morning. The skate deck in most areas is in better condition than expected. We groomed to the second cutoff in Yon's valley. The trails adjacent to the Apple Orchard will bypass significant ice just beyond the dike. The classic track is very icy and cannot be reset. Trails on the south end of the system, with more sun exposure have more ice. As the day progresses the trails will get very soft.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Groomed skate deck on most trails, including Rattlesnake and Upper Trail. Skate deck is firm with a good corduroy from grooming. Classic track is in very good shape on most trails.

Firsthand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
The last few reports were from the groomers, so I'm adding a skier report. I skated and Andreas classiced on beautifully groomed trails on great snow. Skate deck was firm and smooth, the entire system was tracked, and the downhills were very manageable. The only flaw was some dirt showing under the tracks at the very beginning of Rattlesnake. Well worth the drive!

Refreshed skate lanes in all lower trails Saturday evening. Classic tracks look good. Ready for a big ski Sunday!
