Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 39    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Sunday, March 5, 2017
Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, B skis ]
Skated the main flatter trails in order to avoid bare spots and icy downhills. Snow was a mixture of soft, a little ice (not very good edging). Pine needles and cones in most areas due to recent strong winds. Encountered some bare spots to step around. Still ok for an easy ski.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Good skis ]
Very nice conditions for skiers on Sunday. Firm skate deck, clean, and generally solid coverage. Some trouble spots, as would be expected, since parts of the system were down to bare ground before the weekend. Many happy skiers enjoying the trails on their way home from the non-Birkie.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Fresh snow left ongroomed on the outer loops made for s great Birkie alternative: setting tracks. Just a few slushy spots, but overall great coverage and good skiing.

Skied Base Loop, Tornado Alley, Survivor, Yukon, XC Express, Steeplechase, Silver Strider. All fully covered with very few thin spots posing no particular problem. Enough snow that skate strokes didn't break through to the crust below. Good to very good skiing.

Classic skied today with toko yellow klister. Great kick in the morning then by noon lost it with the 48 degree temp. Overall trails are in good shape you just need to get off the trail before it gets to warm. Winter park is going to open at 8:00 Sat. And Sun. Which is an hour earlier than normal.

Made another trip north to find snow-this time Winter Park in Minocqua. All groomed trails were awesome-best skiing of the year for me. Solid base with perfectly groomed corduroy and perfect temp 20F.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Skied wolf tracks, Red pine and Steeplechase today. All the wind blown debris from several days ago have been tilled in. Classic tracks were very nice with just a few icy spots. Skate decks looked solid and clean. Oak leaves are blowing on to the trail but didn't pose any problems. Used VR55 today and had good kick all afternoon.

I skied all the Wilderness Trails today which were groomed earlier this week. Conditions were excellent with a nice fast track and good control on the downhills.

I skated the Nekoosa and Wolf Tracks. It was last groomed several days ago so there was about 1.5 inches of new snow on the skate deck. I would rate it good to very good.
