New Reports Report Requests

Notes

Maintained by Elk River Nordic Nordic Ski Club, these trails have become a hot-spot for fantastic skiing in the North Metro. Trails are largely wooded over rolling terrain, but some sections have good climbs and descents. Trails consist of several interconnected loops and are aptly named--be sure to check out the "Top-of-the-World" and "Gravity Box" as well as "Wash Pond Flats" to the NE of the biathlon range. There is not a warming shack, but at least one port-o-potty at the main parking lot. Primarily groomed for skate (not always tracked for classic).

Firsthand: Freestyle Grooming Scheduling

Conditions: Not very much fun. I went on a short test ski Monday evening and found the trail section that I was on was skiable, but very hard. I went for a walk instead. Skiing is not recommended until conditions improve.
Eagle 17 and Rookie Ski Dad III made a grooming run Sunday evening at transition and were able to stir up the base in some locations before it froze solid. With minimal base to work with they weren't able to hit it as hard as needed to bring the trail up everywhere. Remember the good old days when we used to measure great skiing in weeks or months? Lately it has been more often measured in hours. We will try a grooming run with the Godzilla screens on Friday when it warms a bit. Stay tuned.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle Secondhand
[ Good skis ]
Was out at 11:00 am today the conditions were fantastic. The trail system is getting a lot of use and everyone had big smile on their face. The groomers are scheduled again tonight so it should be a wonderful run tomorrow for those that are not skiing the loppet. Be sure to enjoy while it lasts.

Grooming
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: 1/2 inch new snow Friday. Shallow tracks set on RR grade and west. Outer loop screened Friday night.
Recent snows have provided an adequate base and have become firm over the past several evenings. Friday nights grooming run should provide a fine ski on Saturday. Enjoy!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Fresh 1-2" powder on top of packed base from Tuesday's plentiful snowfall. Several kms of new classic tracks now.
Plenty of skiers out enjoying Woodlands today, so looks like the Ancient One dispatched a grooming team tonight to roll the fresh power into the base. From what I could observe, the groomers hit the perimeter trail, walking trail and biathlon range area. Skiing should be quite fine on Friday and the entire weekend.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Soft extra 2-3 inches on skate deck, fresh set diagonal tracks are fabulous.
What a difference a day makes, not all agreeable. Started with a skate loop and found the extra 2 inches delivered this morning really made it more like work to get around outer loop. So called my bride and had her bring the classic skis to do spend some more time on fabulous groomed diagonal tracks set today. Thanks ol' Ancient One for providing a wonderful February ski outing. Many others out enjoying the scenery and skiing also.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle Grooming Scheduling
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: The outer loop skied like four inches of freshly rolled snow for my late Wednesday afternoon lap. It was a bit of work due to the soft surface, but very nice to be back on fresh snow rather than hard pack. The trail was chopped up on some of the ups and comfortably soft on the flats and downs. There are wind blown icy stretches in some areas, most notably on Stony Rollers and the Prairie loop.
Ancient One rolled the center of the outer loop Wednesday evening to knock down the chop and take a little more air out of the snow. The next grooming of the outer loop is planned for Friday evening. After a several year hiatus from grooming, Ancient Two is planning to lay down some tracks for us Thursday morning. AO I and AO II were two of the founding members of the Woodlands Trail Crew in 1988. They both have slowed some and can be a bit crotchety at times, but it is still good to have them around, mostly. Enjoy!

Back in business! Four new inches rolled last evening by Shear Pin and DPR. Re-rolled this morning by Chainsaw and Ancient One. Crash is out now doing a little touch-up rolling. Except for a few spots on the asphalt trails, we had a thin hard base underneath to protect our skis. By using care on the paved portions, good skis should be just fine. Enjoy!
