Trail Reports

2016-2017 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 39    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Wednesday, March 15, 2017
Evening
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: Most, Rock skis ]
The snow from Monday is hard packed and rutted. Bare spots are becoming more frequent. Classic tracks set on Tuesday are largely burned through to ground. There are spots where the skiing is good, but mostly, not.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Fair bordering on poor. Numerous bald spots, classic tracks looked virtually unusable in many places, lots of rocks and branches sticking through the skate deck. Blue trail was bordering on poor on Wednesday around noon. Green (Meadow) trail was in fair condition at first but it was deteriorating rapidly in the afternoon. In spite of sub-freezing temperatures, the mid-March sun is winning the fight, and it's only supposed to get warmer. Thursday morning will probably still be skiable, anything further than that may be a gamble at this point...

7" new snow groomed to a 2-3" base made fair skate skiing with some thin and bare spots. Did the 2 mile of the lighted loop as I avoided the steep climbs which had many thin and bare areas. The shortcut through the pines to skip two tier was especially thin. Thank the groomers for making skiing possible this late season.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
Lapham Peak received about 7 inches of snow on Monday. All trails were packed down to about a 2 to 3 inch base. Skate lanes are in great condition with some debris poking through from the recent high winds. A classic track was set on the entire system and is in good to great condition. Trail lights will be on until 9pm Monday through Saturday evenings as long as there is skiable snow.

Nice conditions again this morning on the manmade loops. Similar to yesterday, though temps were a bit warmer. Dirt still not coming out. Began to slow a bit around 9:30. May be worth another look early Saturday morning.

Conditions on the manmade snow loops are mixed, from fair to good. The rock solid base is still a foot or more deep in most sections, but there are some icy spots. Very nice skiing around the main loop this morning -- mostly a couple of inches of ground-up ice on the base, with some stretches that have to be double poled. Dirty, but the dirty doesn't come out until it gets several degrees above freezing. A shallow track is evident in some sections. Should be good early on Friday morning.

Better than I expected, great glide and edging at 9:30 when I started but it got slower fast. Some ice on the summer stage climb. Staying to the left avoided the ice down magic carpet but the bottom of magic carpet and most of the east side was icy and dirty. Conditions on the trail across the middle was quite good.

Skied 20K on the man made loop early this morning before things warmed up. Freshly groomed however, there are some places where there was glare ice from puddles that have refrozen and some thin spots but they are well marked and manageable. Kudos to the groomers all things considered! Not certain what things will look like after today but am keeping my fingers crossed for at least one more outing later this week.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: Partial, Good skis ]
Classic Skied the man-made loop this morning. At first skating looked more fun, but with the skate deck turning to sugar as the morning went on I was glad to be in the tracks-- what was left of them. Mixed bag of slush and ice in the tracks, but better than not skiing. Thick base of ice that should be around for a while.

Fastest sugar snow conditions this season. The new man-made snow added to the hard base was groomed to perfection. The glide and edging were great. Started at 10:15am at 31degrees and after 20 laps it was still good at 37 degrees.
