2015-2016 season

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Don't put on storage wax yet! Decent conditions for what might be a last hurrah!
Skied on the west side today in 4-6 inches of fresh, light powder. Alternated between icy and leafy base, but overall complete coverage. Probably rock ski conditions, but not too shabby for what might be the last day or two of skiing in Madison for the season. I'd suggest classic over skate; the skied in track is quite nice.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Very good classical and skating.
No grooming, skier set classical tracks. Skating is better on the West. Pretty good coverage with some ice showing. I went down the triple turn on the East side for the first time, full coverage all the way down. Someone had dragged a tree stump into the middle of the trail, there was no way to avoid it and I only saw it because I was checking the trail on my way up. It was set so that you would not see it coming around the corner from the top. You'd either hit the stump or the trees off the trail. I did move the stump, but skiers should be careful on that hill as it could happen again.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair but icy on the West.
The deck was groomed which was good and bad. It brought up icy, chunky snow in thin spots but added some depth elsewhere. Classical tracks were surprisingly good. The first and second downhills are very icy, no control but you and your skis.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair skating on the west.
Just enough snow to cover most of the solidly iced trail. Some sections had more cover and the classical tracks had filled in nicely. Rather enjoyable skiing that won't hold up.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Good to very good skating on the West side.
Don't let the mess at the approach deter you -- that's as bad as it gets. Freshly groomed skate deck. Lots of crunchy snow but a surprising amount of very good skating. There are some exposed ice patches which are easily seen and avoided. Considering the rain to snow ratio it's surprisingly good. The big hill was in great shape, superb grooming effort.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair to good but with thin base and debris.
Started before sunrise and before the "big snow" arrived, skied 27 km of the northwest side only. Surprisingly good in some spots-other spots icy and very thin. The uphills were very good. Downhills- especially the long one with s turn were very icy. Watch out for small root exposed that I crashed on right after the s turn.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Excellent skating West and East.
Fresh snow and freshly groomed. Full coverage even through the soccer and baseball areas. I forgot what loose snow feels like. The downhills on the west side were rather narrow which made them a little tricky on first run.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Poor to fair west side skating.
Mostly poor. The approach to the loop is awful and the loop itself is not that good. Very hard, dirty and thin. My skis caught debris several times. The big hill had the best conditions. The classical tracks are solidly iced, thin and dirty but I did see one determined skier on very short wax less skis moving along. For the obsessed skiers only.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Fair. Skate lane ok, some dirt. Classic tracks minimal and very icy. Rock skis preferred.
I skated this afternoon. I totally avoided the loop around the ball fields and stuck to the lit trails. Conditions were fair, icy and some dirt scraped through the snow and debris scattered in parts. Overall very skiable. Classic tracks minimal in parts and has a lot more dirt in it than the skate lane.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Good to very good on the west side trails. The trails were recently groomed. The new snow had bonded to the icy base. Mostly good on the east side trails. Fair to poor on the flats by the softball fields and hockey rink due to drifting and exposed ice from last week.
The west trails at Elver were good to very good as long as they were on the hills. The flats by the softball fields were icy, drifted bare or covered with drifted snow. Overall pretty good. The east trails were good too, except for the top of the sledding hill and next to the hockey rink, which had a section that was treacherous, solid ice. The snow was pretty slow with the cold temperature. The classic track was skied in. The skate deck was firm and flat on the west end trails.
