No grooming done. Plenty of snow. Strictly backcountry but I laid down a rough classic track making a loop out from the main parking area. Had the place all to myself. Snow texture was varied but about mid-day some sun-soaked, low spots were getting pretty sticky but all in a all a great workout and a beautiful day!

Joanie and I arrived at the trailhead at 7 am after a very early morning drive from Madison. We skied the 12K blue loop and 5K green loop at this great classic-only gem. The trails had just been groomed the day before, so they were in excellent condition after several inches of fresh snowfall earlier in the week. The track was just a bit fast, but made for a fun ski. Thanks for the great grooming-well worth the drive!

Excellent conditions, lots of skiers. Nice to see so many people out on a gorgeous day. The Underdown has always been one of my favorites due to the challenging terrain, and diversity of the forest itself. High open hardwoods, dark cedar and hemlock lowlands, even popple slash and bog swamps all make for the miles to pass by quickly.

Skied the green loop with a group of people. It was snowing at the time and the trails were soft and beautiful. There is no prettier place to ski than Underdown. You could still see the tracks from the last grooming. Lovely ski. I especially like that there are "go around" places for the hills. That made it easy for people in my party to choose whether to ski down the hill or not. I will be back.

A word of caution regarding the Underdown trails. A heavy melt followed by an overnight freeze turns the next day's conditions extremely dangerous. The tracks turn into mini luge runs and any snow outside the tracks freeze over making even any type of snowplow useless. The downhills are a pretty much out of control situation. Uphills are more than difficult with the hard crusts preventing a decent herringbone and the tracks are too icy to allow a kick was to work well. Best to wait for the next snowfall and a re-groom. Underdown is just too remote to risk a backcountry injury.

At 10am, the trails had not ben re-groomed from yesterdays thaw and last nights freeze. I spoke with someone in the parking lot that had just completed the green loop, and he said it was very icy and treacherous, so I did not ski.

First time at the Underdown, and it won't be the last, just an awesome set of trails!! Decent depth on the tracks, nice pole plant. Course seemed to nicely survive the warmup, hopefully snow on the way! Skied in 35 degree, windless conditions. Doubled tracked throughout. Carpe Skiem.

Skied the Green loop twice this morning and conditions were excellent. I started and finished before the temps hit 30, which led to fast hills. Skied with Atomic skins with no issues with kick. Very, very few bare spots. Most debris came from the groomer knocking down hemlock needles when grooming.

Fresh grooming, new tracks, some thin spots. Mostly very good, soft snow, pretty! Conditions were good. Fast downhills. Skied the 8 mile loop. Hills were soft and hard work. An excellant ski. Best of 2018.

Early December conditions. 8-10" of loose snow in woods. Trail is well packed. Tracks are a little shallow and there is a fair amount of debris in sections but there are few, if any, bare spots. Considering the lack of snow it is quite skiable.
