Trail Reports

2016-2017 season

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Today, the five inches of new snow were compacted and tracks set, where possible. According to Dale, some areas have leaves and grass coming through the tracks from lack of snow (kind of like the first time of the season). The high ground on the race track is rough and the blow down area on the boulevard is rough in spots, as well. The heavy snow on the conifers makes it a pretty sight on the trails. Thanks to Dale Siebert for today's grooming.

Hooray for the snowfall! 4-5" of new snow were incorporated, hummocks were renovated to make them evener and new tracks were set today. This snowfall had plenty of moisture and groomed nicely. The tracks look good.

All of the trails have new tracks. The 4" of fresh, fairly dry snow were enough to cover up all the twigs and pine needles, as well as to allow new tracks to be set. They look great with the sun and shadows in the snow-covered conifers. Skiing should be really good. Thanks, Dale.

Skied Drummond on Tuesday and Wednesday. Outstanding. Thank you for such wonderful grooming. A little slower on Wednesday, but still good.

Grooming Secondhand
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
According to reports from the past two days, the tracks have been holding up well in this weather. As long as it dips below freezing at night, they should maintain their shape. I won't be grooming again until we get significant new snow, partly because the base is thin, but also because the road from the groomer barn to the trail is bare in spots. Think snow.

The Drummond Classic Only Ski Trails were wonderful today. The tracks were perfectly groomed and were not melting despite high 30 degree temperatures. This trail system is a gem!

All the trails have been compacted and the first tracks of the winter have been set. We received about 5 inches of cold, dry snow in the past few days, which were a welcome addition to the scant base. The tracks look good, but are soft. The conifers are beautiful with their load of snow, but gusty winds have been blowing snow onto the tracks and may fill some in. Enjoy January skiing!

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
All of the trails were combed out today, but no tracks were set. We were able to take out some of the undulations and compact trails to full width. There is still a considerable amount of debris in the form of twigs and pine needles still showing. Once we get sufficient new snow we should be able to set tracks. In the meantime, feel free to skate ski. Jim and Dale also cleared at least a dozen fallen trees from the last wind storm.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Rock skis ]
No change from a week ago, other than a light dusting. I am quoting a fellow groomer's report from his "Little Siberia" trails below, because my report is the same:
"We wait and wait, for snow. Our thin base held up pretty well after the thaw and rain of a few days ago but it's lumpy and hard, and lots of shrapnel on the trail from the high winds. I'm picking up the larger branches and I'll surely find a down tree or two before I'm through. I could scrape up the hard pack but it's not worth the effort or strain on the equipment. Hold tight. Snow will come. Really. Stay tuned."

Today all trails have been rolled. No tracks were set. Snow in the woods is about 8". The rolled base is about 3". It's pretty rough underneath yet, but at least it's all prepared for the next snowfall. Skate if you wish, since no tracks will be set until we get enough new snow.
