Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 10 of 10    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec
Saturday, March 5, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Fresh ungroomed 3" of new snow on Massie Hall loop. Temps about 31, coverage great, used no wax skis. Beautiful day. Firm track under powder.
Did a quick 10k around Massie Hall, first time this year. Was pleasantly surprised about the coverage which near the lake is often an issue. Snow was plentiful, classic conditions were great for no wax.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Excellent grooming with some debris in tracks.
Skied from Cascade Lodge up to Deeryard trails. Lower quarter mile is icy. There are pine needles in tracks on the hillside area. Deeryard, tower and short loop are in perfect shape. It would be nicer if there were single tracks rather than doubles.

Grooming
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Pisten Bully Groomed packed powder and perfect conditions.
Could not get any better. Beautiful also. Forgot my phone so I don't have pictures but the woods is very pretty contrasted with the bright blue February sky. Deeryard ski down is phenomenal.

Morning
Firsthand: Classic
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Recent snowfall obliterated the nicely set tracks from last Friday.
We skied in towards Deeryard lake, but didn't complete the loop. There was about 4" of fresh snow covering the tracks.

Grooming
[ Good skis ]
Conditions: Packed powder with perfectly set tracks.
Best Skiing of the season on the Pioneer/Deeryard loop areas. Perfect weather with some light snow forecast for the weekend. Peak season skiing for sure--not to mention the woods are exceptionally beautiful right now!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Shallow track on Pioneer Loop, lots of pine tree debris, not to mention wolf scat! Much better coverage on Deer Yard loop. Light snow dusting helped. Avoid klisters on the ascent even though it is a constant 4K uphill, as pine needle klister does not glide well. Something between blue and purple may work better.
System is improving but still needs more snow. Water bars on the Deer Yard loop next to the lake are easy to ski around, but on the second downhill on the Short Loop they were hazardous and bumpy. Skied up Pioneer to the cut across, around deeryard, up the firepower, and then the short loop before skiing down Pioneer. An exciting day listening to howling wolves!

Conditions: Excellent conditions, packed powder, good tracks all the way down to the lake.
I skied the Pioneer Loop and it was excellent skiing. All Norpine is clear of brush and skiing great!

Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Double tracked groomed around most of the upper loop including fire tower trail. Short loop not yet groomed. Single track on the 2.2 K trail from the shelter to the parking lot. Lakeside loop had lots of water and low spots that required walking around. B skis recommended for most of loop.
It was great to get out on this beautiful loop but it really needs more snow and colder temps to freeze the water and cover the thin areas. The connector trail to Cascade River trails looked groomed but we did not venture down there. The good news was the brush overhang was minimal after what I am sure was a big clearing effort. Thanks to Norpine grooming efforts!

[ B skis ]
Conditions: Fair/mixed. Some dips and gullies; partially groomed/tracked. Use B skis.
We skied near Cascade Lodge (lookout trail) on the 27th; then at Deeryard today. Could use more snow at lower levels - state park not groomed and advocating hiking! Upper areas had enough snow and were tracked (thanks Norpine!) but hills had lots of dips and gullies that made going downhill difficult. Deeryard lakeside had 8-10 spots of open water to pick around or hop over. Down to the lodge was skiable, but rough. Non lake side of loop had been driven over by snowmobilers, so not many tracks were left. Sad: first time I've seen snowmobilers contesting/intentionally running/on the ski trails. Saw a few near Cascade Lodge ("lost") on the ski trail on the 27th; then part of Deeryard flattened; on exiting, the spur to the Deeryard loop - which was perfectly tracked 2 hours earlier - had been obliterated by snowmobilers riding around in circles grinding out all traces of ski trail.
