Trail Reports

2015-2016 season
Reports 1 to 7 of 7    Month: Feb | Jan
Tuesday, February 9, 2016
Afternoon
Firsthand: Classic
[ Bare ground ]
Conditions: Mostly icy, completely bare in spots.
Had to get off my skis several times to walk for 25-75 yards to get through bare patches. Icy spots throughout. A few patches of 50-100 yards of good skiing (classic). Lots of blowing snow had covered the tracks, so difficult to make out the trail even when the snow as okay.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Varying - fair to poor.
Lots of ice - I could still get an edge for the most part. I was out right away at twilight it seems like it was softening up when the sun came up. Left shortly after sunrise. North trail from activity center to park road has some pretty bad spots. Lots of walking/dog traffic on trails (shouldn't be). I'd recommend leaving from the campground vistors center. South side again was way better. Still patches where a gopher hole would show through. Skate deck is OK. Wouldn't plan on classic in the tracks. There are spots that are decent, lots where you'd be out. Just a note, my pictures show the bad.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Trails groomed Friday. Varying conditions - some excellent, some good, some poor.
The South side of the park including the campground area seems to have better conditions than the north end. Lots of dog walking on trail in north section by activity center. Skate was pretty good. There are some dirty patches of snow where the ice layer below had dirt and was churned up. It wasn't the ground coming through, but dirt mixed in snow (see pictures). For classic, the tracks aren't the greatest but totally skiable. There are a few spots where they are thin. There's a layer of ice below the trail and when they tracked it a portion is ice. Other spots it's a little thin. Not many spots. I wouldn't let it keep one from skiing - just probably not your best skis out.

Observation
Conditions: Observation from the trailhead: Thin but still covered.
Stopped by to check out the skijor trail conditions after the warm spell and they were better than expected. A few footprints but no bare ground heading south from parking lot. Some grass poking through the deck and a few bare spots heading north from parking.

Fair to good. Generally adequate coverage but thin. Many leaves and thin spots in hill section. Hill section rutted also. Better skating on middle section. Golf course not rolled and no classic tracks yet. Need more snow.

Park trails have been packed and combed but no classic tracks set yet. A few spots with dirt showing.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ B skis ]
Conditions: Not groomed but skiable.
I have been skiing the campground area (old archery range) and skijor trails. No grooming yet but they smoothed out the first snow with a snowmobile. This worked because it didn't drag up dirt into the snow. Trailhead building was closed today. Not many skiers yet this year.
