Observation Scheduling
[ Trails Open: All ]
Trails are very icy, skiing conditions are very poor. I haven't seen a skier out for well over a week. The annual Trails By Candlelight event, scheduled for tomorrow, which would have included over 4 miles of candlelit cross-country ski trail, has been canceled all together.

I went for a walk from the Holland Lake trailhead and crossed a ski trail a few times. I could see a few marks of where skis had gone, but the trail was a combination of ice and hardpack snow on top of ice. No tracks left.

The groomer attempted to pack the trails today and reported difficult packing conditions as the snow that fell was easily pushed off the existing icy trail base by the grooming equipment.
Notice about UPCOMING SKI TRAIL CLOSURES next week: Ski trails starting from the Holland Lake Trailhead will be closed January 30 and 31, 2017 due to natural resource restoration work. Affected ski trails include: 26-19-20-25, 19-16, 11-13 and 11-7. During this closure, the ski trail segment from intersection 7 to 14 will be signed as a 2-way ski trail.

Today I skied from the Schulze Lake beach toward Marsh Lake and then came back Portage Lake to marker 34 and then back to Schulze lake (Schulze to 60 to 51 to 34 to 40 to the visitor center and beyond). The snow was much as you'd expect: somewhat soft in the open area and icy hard in the forested areas. It was common to see tracks obliterated in highly trafficked area and on some descents. Along the route that goes past the auxiliary parking lot, I saw a few patches of yellow, which... could be dog but I took to be thinning snow. But I did not come across dirt, and leaves and pine cones were thankfully few. I did see plenty of footprints along the way, plus a few piles of scat.

Went in at holland lake. Yesterday's rain and snow mostly covered the set tracks and left a thin but skiable snowcone base. I was spiderman both up and down the hills on my trusty waxless. Lots of thin spots but not yet any open ones, and a serviceable trail set by an earlier intrepid strider. Get out today and burn some calories! It's gorgeous out there.
