Firsthand: Freestyle

Skiable! Saw one other optimistic skier and some confused deer. Coverage in the woods is still overall decent considering the temperatures (avoidable patches), but the fields are deteriorating quickly.

Firsthand: Classic
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
I skied the trails this morning. Considering the lack of snow the trails are in good condition, both the skate deck and the classic tracks. There's a few brown spots that are easily avoidable, and some leaves in the classic track. The possible exception is the trail out to the west ball field. It's doable but there's more exposed dirt and debris.

I skied all N and E of the main parking, about 9mi. 99% was well-covered, but there were some spots of vegetation or leaves in the track or coming through (but no damaging rocks or roots). Fast in the tracks, 10% had to be out of tracks and was slower. The high loops far north did require a few marching steps across a couple grass spots. Glad to get out.

Rock skis for sure. I did the West Park Loop and the oval around the ballfields west of the Quarry Hill complex. Sadly our snow is going fast. I filled in tons of bare spots (borrowing from piles and drifts on the trail sides of course) on the classic track today and did yesterday, so those bits will be gone again tomorrow. They set a great base but it's melting away, too. Don't take any skis out there that you value.

Overall good coverage at Quarry Hill today. A few dirty spots and a few spots where the grass is starting to show, but easily avoidable. Classic tracks are set but aren't very deep.

[ B skis ]
Good conditions considering the snow we've had. In the classic tracks there is detritus coming from both above and below the snow, and it's definitely thinning in some spots and the tracks disappear sometimes. The flats and up to the baseball field are the clearest, with more debris in the wood trails. Still very skiable. The skate deck looks similar.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
A fresh groom should set up nicely for weekend skiing. Conditions remain stable, with good skate deck cover and avoidable dirt churn. Classic track is good in places, but you'll need to ski out about 1/3 to 1/2 of the time.

A noble effort by the grooming crew with a minimum depth of snow. The classic tracks were very solid and adequately deep. Alas, there was significant snirt and exposed grass which caused me to abandon the tracks throughout the course. Still very skiable but I will skate next time.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
All Quarry Hills trails were refreshed this morning. The conditions as such that the risk of damage to skis is possible but not likely; if you have more than one pair of skis don't use your top racing skis. The skate deck is good with only a few thin spots but not so extensive that rock skis are needed. The classic track is good, a bit shallow in places but perfectly usable for recreational classic skiing. The Parkwood Hills section of trails has the thinnest snow cover, is probably better suited for skate than classic, and is likely more enjoyable for skiers that can handle fast downhills.

Trails received a fair amount of snow both from the storm and blow-in snow from the wind where it catches in the woods and protected areas. The awesome grooming crew finished packing and setting track Sunday afternoon despite cold temps, I classic skied a couple hours later. Skate deck was nice throughout although it was apparent that snow depth wasn't deep yet, a few bumps to ski over here and there. Very skiable but use B skis. The classic track was well formed and solid with some dirt showing occasionally from the track setter running a bit deep. I filled needy spots with snow from the side of the trail where it helped. Some areas had minor grass or leaves you could ski over but good coverage everywhere else. Plan to step out of the track here and there to avoid limited issues if using skis your worried about. I didn't ski to the West Ball Fields or Horrible Hills due to cold wind. Woods areas are protected from the wind and nice to ski at below zero temps.
