Rice Creek Athletes Gear up for Summer
Congratulations to Julia Johnson (Jr. RAHS) and Sarah Tokos (Soph, Irondale) who have been nominated to join the USA Canoe Kayak U-18 team representing the US at a pair of international regattas held in Lake Placid, NY and Rideau, Ontario this summer. Â This is the result of their hard work as varsity skiers for their respective Nordic ski teams, on the water since ice out, and in the weight room. Â They will be competing in Sprint Kayak, racing in single, double and quad kayaks over distances from 200-1000 meters. Â The regattas draw athletes from 15-20 nations and are an early test to see who may be competitive for the Jr World Championships in 2013. Â Also representing Team USA next week is Danzig (Ziggy) Norberg (Sr. Irondale), who will be racing sprint kayak at the Paracanoe World Championships in Poznan, Poland next week. Â Ziggy won his berth at US Team trials held in Oklahoma City April 20/21. Â Ziggy will be the youngest athlete to represent the US in Paracanoe, and is building a campaign to the Paralympics in 2016 when Paracanoe becomes a full member sport.
