BWCA Ski Trail Clearing Volunteers Sought
Grand Marais, MN - The Banadad Cross Country Ski Trail Committee is seeking
volunteers to assist in clearing the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness'
(BWCA) Banadad Ski Trail. Volunteers are needed for the weekends of
September 29-October 1, October 20-21, October 27-29 and November 17-19.
Each fall some 700 hours of volunteer labor is required to clear the
summer's accumulation of brush and down trees before the trail can be opened
for Nordic Skiing in the winter. In addition to clearing this year's "crop"
of down trees and brush, volunteers will continue the clean up from last
year's devastating BWCA wind storm. Since the use of power tools is
prohibited in the BWCA, all the trail clearing must be done by hand.
Volunteers provide work clothing and sleeping bags. There is a minimal
charge to cover cost of meals. On these trips volunteers stay at either a
USFS bunkhouse or a cabin along the Gunflint Trail.
Located near the Gunflint Trail, the nineteen-mile Banadad is the BWCA's
longest cross-country ski trail. The Banadad serves as the connecting link
between the Bearskin/Golden Eagle and Upper Gunflint Nordic Trail systems.
Boundary Country Trekking's Banadad Trail Committee coordinates the
maintenance and grooming of the trail under agreement with the U.S. Forest
Services' Gunflint Ranger District.
