Welcome to REI Events Update. Not deterred by a little freezing rain and
slush, winter activities continue here at REI. Whether you are skiing a
marathon race this month or thinking ahead to summer endurance activities,
our first clinic of the month is one not to be missed. Also, we still have
a line up of waxing clinics left on the schedule. Great opportunities to
learn how to get more than just a big mess out of that tube of klister.

GENERAL PRESENTATIONS, CLINICS & EVENTS
ENDURANCE SPORTS NUTRITION
Thursday, February 1st at 7PM
REI Bloomington
This program is intended for all athletes, but may be of particular interest
to cross-country ski racers preparing for the upcoming Mora Vasaloppet and
American Birkebeiner. Carrie Peterson M.S., R.D., L.D., will draw from her
background as both a registered dietitian specializing in sports nutrition
and as an endurance athlete, to tell you about eating plans for optimal
training, racing, and recovery. Included will be discussion on a healthy
diet for athletes, fluid needs, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and
carbohydrate loading. Join us for an evening of outstanding nutritional
information!
TREKKING IN NEPAL
Wednesday, February 14th at 7 PM

REI employee Jack Collis takes you on a tour of the land of mountains and
monasteries. Join him for slides and information on Trekking in the Everest
Region of Nepal. Experience the spectacular scenery and colorful people of
the Khumbu region, as well as, Katamandu and the Everest Base Camp area.
ECO CHALLENGE - SABAH 2000

This year's Eco Challenge was held in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, in the waters
of the South China Sea, in the jungles of Danum Valley, in the caves of Jin
Gua Madai, and on the rapids of the Segama River. Barry Schon, Dan
Williams, Nancy Ford, and Chris Andrews, all members of a Minnesota based
team that participated in last year's race, will share their reflections on
the race, their fellow competitors, and the challenges they faced. They
will also sharing their plans for racing in 2001.
INLAND SEA KAYAKERS- Dehydrating Food

Using dehydrated foods is a great way to get tasty, nutritious meals when
you're kayaking, camping or backpacking. Dehydrating is a traditional means
of preserving foods for extended periods of time -- perfect for when you
have limited space and a healthy appetite!

tools and techniques needed to capture beautiful landscape shots on your
next outdoor adventure. With an emphasis on color photography, they will
cover everything from camera operation to composition. Specific class
topics include: Equipment, Film, Metering, Subject, and Composition.

refine your waxing technique. These informative waxing clinics are geared
for novice and seasoned veteran skiers alike.
Hyland Hills TELEMARK RACE SERIES
Sunday, February 4th at 1:30 PM
Join other pinheads at the Twin Cities area's oldest Telemark Race Series.
All ages and abilities encouraged to participate. Course opens at 11:30,
race begins at 1:30 PM. Series sponsored by REI and Hyland Ski & Snowboard
Association.

CLASSES
WEDNESDAY NIGHT CLIMBING CLASSES
REI Bloomington
The class is an introductory course taught by a certified Vertical Endeavors
instructor. The lesson will cover equipment selection, knot tying, belay
technique, rope work, climbing commands, and safety issues. The course fee
is $20 for REI members, $25 for non-members, and includes the use of
climbing shoes and a harness. Classes are offered from 6PM - 9PM, every
Wednesday night on the REI Pinnacle at the Bloomington store. All students
must be at least 14 years of age. Advanced registration and payment is
required.

CPR CERTIFICATION with the MINNESOTA SAFETY COUNCIL
Thursday, February 8th from 5 - 9 PM
REI Bloomington
This four-hour course prepares participants to handle emergency situations
where CPR is an option. The course is a great supplement to the Wilderness
First Aid Class. For pricing, to register or for more information call the

WILDERNESS FIRST AID CLASSES

The Minnesota Safety Council and REI are offering a 16 hour standard
Wilderness First Aid Course. Wilderness First Aid is designed for
backcountry enthusiasts who may experience medical emergencies when
emergency services are not an option. To register or for more information
