U.S. International Summer Biathlon Race Series:
Sprint Competition
Soldier Hollow, UT - Sunny skies and little wind provided an international
field with perfect conditions for today's Sprint Competition at the Biathlon
and Nordic venue for the upcoming 2002 Winter Olympic Games. Today's Sprint
competition was the 2nd race of the three race series with tomorrow's Pursuit
competition concluding the Festival. These races have provided the athletes
with an opportunity to race and train at the site where they hope to be
competing in February of this upcoming year at the Winter Olympic Games.
The Ukrainian Team showed why they are favorites to do well this year with a
sweep in both the Men's and Women's competitions. Elena Petrova, who won
Thursday's running race was edged out by teammate Tatyana Vodopianova with
equal shooting. Oksana Kvostenko finished in 3rd ahead of Kara Salmela of
Duluth, MN, who missed only one target in her final shooting stage. St.
Cloud, MN's Jill Krause finished in 7th with 4 penalties followed by
Wayzata's Andrea Nahrgang in 8th. Jaime Mueller of Brainerd, MN and now
competing on the U.S. Summer Biathlon Team rounded out the top 10 finishing
with 3 penalties.
In the Junior Women's race, Lanny Barnes of Durango, CO put together a
spectacular final shooting stage to edge out Grand Rapids, MN native BethAnn
Ellingson, who had one additional shooting penalty. Duluth's Caryolyn Treacy
struggled in the range hitting only 5 of 10 to finish in 3rd, followed by
Lanny's sister Tracy Barnes.
A young Ukrainian Men's Team didn't appear to have any problems in today's
race sweeping the top three spots with excellent shooting proving they will
be ready for the upcoming Games. Three time Olympian Curtis Schreiner of
Day, NY proved that he still has what it takes to make the Olympic Team one
more time. Edging out Thursday's winner Lawton Reman by 8 seconds, Schreiner
was the top American in today's competition with two penalties. Dan Campbell
of Hastings, MN turned in a solid performance with two penalties to finish in
10th place followed by teammate and 1998 Olympian Andy Erickson of
Minnetonka. Ben Kremer of Elk River, MN finished in 15th place and Ryan
Cameron of Minneapolis, MN finished in 17th.
Tim Burke of Paul Smiths, NY won the Junior Men's competition with 80%
shooting. Burke was followed by teammate Walt Shepard, who missed just one
target and edged out another teammate, Anders Osthus of Duluth, MN.
