North American Biathlon Championships/U.S. Biathlon Championships
Day 3

Ft. Kent, Maine - Athletes woke up to rain mixed with snow and blustering winds on the final day of racing. Athletes paired up into two-person teams with each racer shooting twice and allowed three extra rounds per stage with a 150m penalty loop for each missed target. The National Guard Team of Kristina Sebastianski and Ekaterina Ivanova got off to a strong start with Sebastianski shooting clean giving her a small lead over Rachel Steer. Steer of Anchorage, AK kept it close, also shooting clean through two stages as she tagged off in second just 5 seconds behind Sebastianski. Steer's teammate Syverine Abrahamson a Junior athlete hailing from Homer, AK gave chase to keep up with Ivanova, but with a penalty in her standing stage, she would drop back and finish in 3rd place. National Team West consisting of Debbie Nordyke from Heber City, UT and Tracy Barnes from Durango, CO made their move with superb shooting to overtake Steer and Abrahamson and finish in 2nd. This was the first National Championship title for both Sebaskianski and Ivanova this week.

There are no givens in biathlon and it was seen today in the Jr. Women's race. Jr. National Team member BethAnn Ellingson of Grand Rapids, MN pulled out a sizable lead in the first leg, while a pack of seven teams gave chase. Entering the range along with Ellingson for prone was Emilia Demarchis of Burlington, VT, who had won her first National Championship title yesterday in the Pursuit event. Demarchis struggled with her shooting leaving the door wide open for Antonia Slaughter of Maple Plain, MN who earlier got caught in a crash with three other athletes. Slaughter cleaned without any extra rounds leaving in 2nd place followed close behind by Cayley Baird of Stillwater, MN and Kelsy Bouchard of Ft. Kent, ME. Entering standing Ellingson continued her strong performance leaving the range clean with a battle for 2nd to take place behind. Slaughter left two targets standing sending her to the penalty loop, Baird left one and Demarchis left with clean shooting as she regained a hold on 2nd place. Ellingson's teammate Brynden Manbeck of Grand Rapids, MN held off the other teams through prone as Slaughter's teammate Brit Salmela of Duluth, MN used only one extra round in prone and inched slowly closer to the lead. Leaving standing Manbeck had 4 penalties sending her to the penalty loop, which opened the door for Salmela who again only used one extra round to clean and ski to victory. Annelies Cook of Saranac Lake, NY and teammate of Dermarchis had three penalties, but held on to take 2nd place followed by Baird and teammate Sonne Nordgren of Stillwater, MN. Ellingson and Manbeck finished in 4th.

Going for his third National Championship and North American Championship titles, Tim Burke of Paul Smith's, NY teamed up with training partner Lowell Bailey of Lake Placid, NY. Leaving the range after the first shooting however was 2002 Olympian Dan Campbell of Hastings, MN. Campbell shot clean with five shots as he left with Burke and 3-time Olympian Curtis Schreiner of Heber City, UT close on his heals. Schreiner's experience with pressure would come into play as he shot clean in standing, while both Campbell and Burke struggled as they headed to the penalty loop. Schreiner tagged off to teammate and 1998 Olympian Rob Rosser also of Heber City, UT with over a minute lead making it look like the battle was now only for 2nd. Rosser would clean his prone, but closing in were both Bailey and Carlos Settle of Quebec-2. Bailey entered the range seeing that Rosser was struggling and went for it hitting only 2 of his first 5 shots and one more with his extra rounds leaving him two penalty loops to Rosser's 3 loops. Making it a ski race, Bailey was able to pull away from Rosser as he skied to his first National Championship and Burke's 3rd of the week. The battle for 2nd was not over as Carlos Settle cleaned standing and passed Rosser in the final loop to take 2nd place.

Anders Osthus of Duluth, MN and Brian Olsen of Bloomington, MN pulled away early with strong shooting performances. Osthus was clean with extra rounds and played the role as the rabbit as he was chased by local favorite Walt Shepard of Yarmouth, ME. Dominic Villenuve of Quebec-1 tagged off in 3rd, 37 seconds behind Shepard just ahead of Kurt Farchmin of Duluth, MN. Osthus' teammate Brian Olsen was clean through prone with Jeff Alden of Caribou, ME following close behind. Olsen opened the door with 2 penalties in standing, but Alden could not capitalize as he left 3 penalties for himself. Osthus and Olsen skied away to their first National Championship title with Shepard and Alden placing 2nd. In the race for 3rd place, Villeneuve's teammate Kevin Tremblay struggled in prone leaving 4 targets, which allowed Bjorn Bakken of Duluth, MN to move up from 4th into 3rd place.

Real Tetrault of the Canmore 2010 Team opened up a sizable lead by shooting clean in both of his shooting stages. Mark Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN kept it close after having one penalty loop in his standing stage to tag off in 2nd place just 15 seconds off the lead. Pursuing close behind in 3rd was Brandon Ostroot of Columbia Heights, MN who like Johnson had one penalty in standing. Tetrault's teammate Colin Robb almost gave the lead up after two penalties in his prone stage, but fought hard to keep it as he cleaned his standing stage winning the North American Championship title. Moving up from 4th place was Quebec-2 of Marc-Andre Bedard and Maxime Leboeuf, who had a combined 7 penalties amongst the two of them to claim 2nd place. Johnson's teammate Ian VanStraten of Duluth, MN had one penalty in prone as he skied across in 3rd place, but with a National Championship in hand. Ostroot and teammate Wynn Roberts finished in 4th place overall.
