Nahrgang makes move for World Championship Team spot; 3 Men in top 10
Lake Placid, NY --
In the second of three races at the U.S. Biathlon World Team trials, there
was a shuffling among the top finishers. The women were the first group out
of the start and were able to take advantage of the hardened track, which
gradually got softer and more difficult for the Men's race. In the Women's
race, Rachael Steer of Anchorage, Alaska turned in another near perfect race
hitting 18 of 20 targets. Finishing in second was Andrea Nahrgang of Wayzata
who turned in one of the fastest ski times of the day. Nahrgang made a few
mistakes in her first and final shooting stages, but was clean otherwise,
hitting 15 of 20 targets. After a 9th place finish in yesterday's
Sprint competition, Nahrgang needed a top three finish in today's race if she
wanted to have any shot at making the World Championship Team. Kara Salmela
of Rogers struggled in the range hitting 12 of 20 putting her in 6th place.
Both Nahrgang and Salmela need a top four finish in Friday's race to make the
World Championship Team. In the Jr. Women's race, Stillwater's Beth Kolb
fought back to finish in 2nd place after yesterday's 6th place result.
Andy Erickson of Minnetonka was one stage away from locking himself a spot on
the World Championship Team, but struggled through his final shooting stage
missing 4 of 5. Erickson raced the majority of the race in 2nd place, but
fell to 7th in the end. Dan Campbell of Hastings, who struggled in
yesterday's Sprint competition, made a move today only to come up short
struggling in his final shooting stage as well missing 4 of 5. Campbell
finished in 8th place with teammate Ryan Cameron of Minneapolis finishing not
far behind in 10th place. John Kurtz of St. Louis Park had a near perfect
shooting race, hitting 19 of 20 targets to finish in 19th place. In the Jr.
Men's race Steve Scott of St. Paul moved up one spot from yesterday's race to
finish in 3rd place today.
Friday will be the final race of the World Team Trials. A World Championship
Team of 3 men and 4 women will be chosen from these races. A European
Championship Team will also be chosen from these races and will consist of a
maximum of 3 men and 2 women.
