North Stars Updates
The mild winters the past three years has not slowed down the enthusiasm and
energy behind the North Star Ski Touring Club (NSSTC) this season as
cross-country skiers are coming out in droves. Nearly 70 people have signed
up for an eight week dryland training and conditioning session for
cross-country skiing, while over 20 people have been turned away due to a
shortage of coaches. Greg Fangel, President of the NSSTC and organizer of
the program stated “We have had overwhelming success with the turnout this
year. I expected 50 skiers and was prepared for 60, but we couldn’t handle
the total demand. Next year we’ll get more coaches and hopefully be able to
accommodate everyone who is interested.”
Fangel also announced the publication of a new booklet for cross-country
skiers. “Ski the Metro, with the North Stars” has a complete list of all
cross-country ski trails within one hour of Minneapolis and St. Paul,
Minnesota. Over 1100 KM of trails are listed including the length of the
trail, the type of trail, a phone number for more information, and the
location of the trail. Waxing information, winter safety, winter first aid,
Minnesota Ski Pass tear-out form and ski trail hotline numbers are also in
the booklet. These booklets will be on-sale at most cross-country ski shops
in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area for $3.00. For mail orders send $5.00 to
North Star Ski Touring Club, Ski Booklet, P.O. Box 4275, St. Paul, MN 55104.
Price includes shipping and handling.
The 1600 member North Star Ski Touring Club has been an asset to
cross-country skiing since 1967, organizing cross-country ski trips, ski
trail clearings, and year ‘round activities for non-motorized sports. The
club also donates funds to support cross country ski trails and
cross-country ski programs.
