Really excellent conditions for the first ski of the season on the Eloise Butler and Quaking Bog trails, all the way down to I-394!! There are no classic tracks, but nicely rolled surface for skating, and minimal debris to worry about. There are a few rocks and frozen branches to dodge, but they are easy to spot. I used rock skis but B skis would be fine if you are careful. The only big issue is that a snowplow seems to have mistakenly plowed away the middle of the Anwatin trail at the upper parking lot for Eloise Butler. I have never seen that lot plowed in 12 years so hopefully it was just a one-off plowing error.

Big thanks to Loppet for rolling Butler and Bog. The trail in Butler is mostly back to the original direction and includes the big climb. The skate deck is still quite soft but it's decent skating as long as you aren't pushing too hard. No classic tracks but striding on the deck would be fine. There is a nasty rock right on the first uphill in Bog that I caught a tip on twice. Maybe someone can break it out of the frozen ground and toss it to the side.

The quaking bog and Eloise Butler ski trails were in nice shape. They're been rolled but had a fluff of the new loose snow on top and had been packed down further by skate skiers. Coverage was good though you could hear dirt or concrete crunching with some pole plants. It was great trouble-free skiing on these sections. Calm in the woods with no wind blowing.

The trails around Wirth Beach and the Quaking Bog were groomed but pretty soft, so it was slow going for skate skiing. There was better coverage than expected, only a few bare spots. The wind blow was pretty severe in places though so it was especially slow going in those spots. I was skating, but I think it would be good for recreational classic skiers. There were no classic tracks, but the grip looked like it would be good. It's wonderful to be skiing on natural snow again--especially so early in the season!

Broke trail in 8" of fresh snow - a classic ski "hike". It was beautiful. Groomers rolled the South Wirth trails around supper time.
Note: My daughters skied last night after the roll. One on skate skis, one on classic. They recommend classic skis for now - skate deck remains soft after just one roll. Classic tracks have not been set.
