2022-2023 season

Adding to the chorus of glorious skiing conditions in the metro! Every inch of Wirth trail was groomed last night and was holding up great this evening, even after a day of sunshine. Butler and Bog continue to have great coverage, just watch the downhill that crosses the road by the Butler garden parking lot: there are tire treads that have gone through because of ongoing work there, so you'll need to take a couple big side steps across. Under 55 is thinning but is still skiable with an icy base layer. The beginning of Daylight Savings seems to embolden walkers, and indeed there were some spots with footprints on the trails today.

Skied all Wirth south trails. Snow was sticky when I went at 5pm, the skate deck wasn't as used as I thought it would be. Footprints in the middle of the trail on Erickson and Quaking bog.

Get here quick. Beautiful conditions with groomed snow topped with a half inch of fresh that skiers have packed just enough. Both man made snow and natural sides were great.

Great new snow made the trails around the quaking bog and Eloise Butler really fun. Good tracks all through, no ice showing, and pleasant temps. I don't think March skiing has ever been so good!

Skied the black advance trails south of Wirth Beach and by Antowon school. Very good tracks except sections by school that were trampled.

Skied the natural snow trails—found them well groomed and faster than I expected with the temperature and new snow. A couple softer spots and ice under bridges were only tough spots but overall very good. (Do we think this base will last to July?).

The amazing winter in south Wirth continues. With the deep natural snow the course has been getting groomed including resetting the classic track daily. With the track now set by ATV rather than snowmobile, it is a far better classic course than ever before. Classic track and skate deck are both perfect.

Afternoon
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
Skied the natural snow from The Trailhead out and around Wirth Lake and back. The snow coverage was all very good, except for under the bridges (reason for rating B skis). A little soft and slow, but still had glide. It was a beautiful day to be out and very good for bonus skiing!

Nice skate deck around the Bog and Butler. Groomers did a solid job. The only reason I said B skis is there was quite a bit of debris. Enjoy the natural trails while we have em!

Afternoon

[ Trails Open: All, B skis ]
After several loops on snowmaking I decided that this might be my last chance to do the natural snow of Eloise Butler and Bog trails, which I hadn't done at all thus far this season. I was pleasantly surprised and glad I ventured away from the tried and true. Although there were patches where it looked like it might be icy, they weren't. Conditions actually seemed to improve in the afternoon. The only exception was crossing Wirth Lake, but I found the skiing better on the ungroomed snow to the side of the groomed lane. I concluded that the sweet spot is between 37 and 40 degrees under overcast skies.
