Deep Portage
is located on 6,307 acres of beautiful glacial hills, lakes,
rivers and bogs. The forest type is predominantly aspen with
the balance consisting of red, white and jack pine with some
red and white oak. Wildlife abounds on the reserve. Deer,
coyote, bear, fisher, and porcupine are just a few of the
local residents.
Overlooking
Bass Pond, the Interpretive Center houses the museum, freshwater
lab, and bookstore and is the starting point for the many
miles of nature and cross country ski trails. Carved through
the glacial moraine of the Portage Hills, Deep Portage maintains
nearly eleven miles of marked and groomed cross country
ski trails. The trails loop back to the Interpretive Center
so that distances and difficulties can be chosen by skiers.
Warmth, beverages, maps, souvenirs, and suggestions are
available in the Center.
Deep
Portage serves groups, organizations, area residents and
visitors with weekly classes, interpretive programs, wildflower
garden displays, weekend retreats and study groups, land
use demonstrations, summer camps, and recreation opportunities
of birding, hiking, hunting, and skiing.
Guests
are housed in the 54,000 square foot cedar and fieldstone
northwoods lodge. The lodge features 27 bedrooms and has
a capacity of 175. These are modern accomodations with hot
running water and flush toilets. Each room has a private
bathroom and large sink area with cubbies for personal items.
Delicious home cooked meals are served buffet style before
the 70 ton granite fireplace in Heritage Hall.
