* THE BIG ONE
The Minnesota Youth Ski League annual Ski Swap is this weekend!
Saturday's event is in St. Paul at Jehovah Lutheran Church,
while Sunday's event is at French Regional Park in Plymouth.
The MYSL event is probably the largest ski sale of youth
ski equipment in the area. Full press release:

* TROLLING
Last winter, Trollhaugen helped out the metro area skiers
by opening their downhill area in the mornings to nordic
skiing. Trollhaugen plans to offer this access again this
winter, and wants to kick things off with a big Nordic Ski
Fest on November 18th & 19th. The weekend will feature clinics,
open skiing time, and a short race to finish the day off.
There will also be equipment demos from major manufacturers
and stores. In order to meet demand, Trollhaugen is asking
for clinic pre-registration by next Monday, November 13th.

* BOOK 'EM
The North Stars Ski Touring Club is offering a mini-booklet
featuring information on nearly all of the metro area ski
trails. 'Ski the Metro with the North Stars' can be found
in most local ski shops, or ordered by mail:

* MAD SKIERS
The Madison Nordic Ski Club is holding their season opener
on Monday, November 13th. Featured at this first meeting
will be talks from Phil Van Valkenberg on the 24 Hours of
Telemark and the new Kortelopet course, and from Bill Pollock
on XC ski venues in Canada. The event is open to all.

* GROWING SNOW
The State of Utah has been experimenting with cloud seeding
to boost snowfall amounts, with some fairly positive results.
Their studies have shown a 14-20% increase in winter precipitation.
Read about their past performance and current seeding efforts,
and catch a cute snow related Calvin and Hobbes cartoon:

* MM EXPO
Midwest Mountaineering is having their annual Winter Expo
this weekend. The cross-country skiing presentations seem
to be pretty sparse this year. One feature will be Phil
Van Valkenberg, from Telemark Resort, who will be there
for a 9 am Saturday morning presentation on the new Kortelopet
and 24 Hours of Telemark races.

* RECENT UPDATES
Keep monitoring the race calendar (we've made a number of
updates in the last two weeks - thanks to Silent Sports
& Greg Marr); video clips from a recent Toko wax clinic;
updates to the training calendar; a clip of someone rock
skiing from the night of the first Twin Cities snowfall;
the latest Slices of Skinnyski column; and a new poll on
Thanksgiving weekend plans.

Last week's question:
What was the original name of the first Winter Olympics?
AND, who won the first Winter Olympic gold medal?
The answer:
They were originally called "International Sports Week 1924";

event

* TRIVIA QUESTION
Planting the seed... two parts:
1. What is the full name of the person most commonly cited
for discovering cloud seeding?
2. And what was the exact date of the groundbreaking discovery?
The first person sending us the correct answer this week
will receive: a Toko headband, a pair of Toko ski binders,
and a packet of XL-1, all compliments of Pioneer Sports.
