Elm Creek Relays
Thursday, January 13, 2004
To the Cold God's surprise, 7 brave souls showed up at Elm
Creek Thursday night and raced the 5K (skate) in the coldest
night of the season. The temp fell quickly to -8F with wind
chill -21F. The snow was cold, and the course was icy and
packed hard. Chip Tabor, Pete Hanson, and Mark Byrne raced
neck to neck until the last hill up from the woods. Chip pulled
away and topped the rest with 13:15. Dan Whipple and Andy
Schakel traced right behind the first group until the last
part of the second loop. Pam Sorenson, encouraged by her friend,
finished the first loop and won the Subaru Factory Team door
prize. Pete Hanson won the Rainbow Rendezvous cup as a door
prize. All in all, this made the race director, Melinda's
day. As the race director and the coach to many junior Olympic
skiers and master group skiers, Melinda was delighted to see
people show up in such a chilly night -- it was a great night
to be with these smiley and steamy spirits.
Here are tonight's race results:
1. Chip Tabor 13:15
2. Pete Hanson 13:21
3. Mark Byrne 13:26
4. Dan Whipple 13:37
5. Andy Schakel 13:41
Due to scheduling conflicts, the race dates/time for the
next two weeks' relay races (Jan 20 & 27) have now been
changed from Thursday nights at 6:30pm to Wed. nights at 7:30pm.
After that, the race dates/time will resume on Thursday nights
at 6:30pm. Please check www.skinnyski.com for the most recent
race information.
