Interview: Courtney Dauwalter
July 22, 2002
At last seasons state meet, Hopkin's junior Courtney Dauwalter
was in eighth place going into the freestyle race, nearly
30 seconds back of number one ranked and 2001 champion, Lindsay
Williams of Hastings. Dauwalter cranked out the only sub 14
minute time in the freestyle race and overtook the leaders
to win both the freestyle and pursuit titles. Later on that
spring at Junior Nationals, Dauwalter teamed up with Williams
and Lindsey Weier (2002 Olympian) to crush the women's J1
relay field, winning by over a minute.
Dauwalter also competes in cross-country running, posting
an impressive eight place finish in last year's state meet
that helped secure the overall team title. In the summers,
she has been participating in the White Noise Nordic program.
Entering her senior year this fall, watch for her to be out
in front again this winter.
We interviewed Dauwalter by e-mail on July 17th.
- Skinnyski: Can you give us a general run down on your
summer training?
Dauwalter: A typical training week for me would include
4 or 5 days of rollerskiing with Randy Gibbs and the White
Noise Nordic team. This includes technique, long skis
and strength drills. We also do one day of hill bounding
at the Hyland downhill area...one of the hardest workouts
ever. I also run 5 or 6 times per week, usually just easy
miles...sometimes I longer distances. And Monday, Wednesday
and Friday I've been lifting weights as well...just arms
though. Once and awhile I bike or swim, just for something
different...and sometimes I just go to the beach...
- Skinnyski: On average, how many hours per week are
you training in the summer?
Dauwalter: Whatever that all adds up to...15-25 hours
maybe? I have no idea.
- Skinnyski: What time of the year do you start ski specific
training?
Dauwalter: After skiing ends in March, I do track through
the spring. But once school is out I start rollerskiing
and pole hiking until August. During the fall I run cross-country,
but I still try to get some ski training in during the
season.
- Skinnyski: Favorite summer training activity?
Dauwalter: I like to just go for long rollerskis with
my team...good to get the miles in and good to catch each
other up on what's happening. We have a lot of fun on
these!
- Skinnyski: The one summer training activity you hate
doing the most?
Dauwalter: I don't really care for the bounding drills
we do at Baker on Mondays and Fridays...they take a really
long time and don't seem to accomplish very much and the
horse flies attack like crazy when we're doing our dips
or pushups or whatever .
- Skinnyski: What's the strangest/funniest thing thats
happened to you during summer training workouts?
Dauwalter: Last year during a summer pole run, we were
running around by the lakes and on some trails through
the woods. We came up over a hill and the trail led us
right to a beach...soon we realized that it just happened
to be a nude beach. EEK! Kinda traumatizing...kinda funny...
- Skinnyski: What was your most memorable race last winter?
Dauwalter: Last winter I had the greatest time out in
Idaho for Junior Olympics...it was amazing being the skate
leg on the relay team with Lindsey Weier and Lindsay Williams.
But close to that is the skate race up at state in Giants
Ridge. The skate course up there is the best course ever...
- Skinnyski: If you had to pick one training tip that
you think was most helpful over the years, what would it
be?
Dauwalter: Have fun!!! (and I definately do...!)
