Viral XC Race League
December 8, 2013Over the past two decades, there has been a decline in the number of collegiate varsity Nordic programs. However, the number of high school skiers has remained steady, if not increased. This results in a lot of talented skiers entering college without direct access to a competitive ski team.
This past summer Skinnyski.com was approached by a group of college ski clubs that wanted to form a competitive race league. As most college clubs are self-funded, opportunities for traveling and competiting head-to-head is limited. So the idea was put forward to offer a virtual race series, where ski clubs could enter races in their own area, but be scored against other clubs from across the region. Thus the formation of Viral XC.
The Viral XC series basics:
- Develop rosters for collegiate clubs to built your race team.
- Each team selects a weekend race to compete in, declaring it by Friday evening.
- Teams compete in the their respective weekend races.
- Teams are scored based on how they do against the entire race field. Top five men and women scores are tallied.
- Results are posted each week, along with a running tally.
- The series season runs for the months of January and February.
- At the end of the season, the weekend scores are tallied up to determine the overall series champion, with prizes awarded.
