Jumped onto the ski trail this afternoon, knowing trails are ungroomed, walkers walking across the trails and on classic tracks. With a lack of grooming here, though I so highly appreciate, the trails were inconsistently groomed this year. I stay enthusiastic and hopeful, and enjoy the new snow. Ski at your own risk. I understand the snow is beautiful farther up north and in Michigan! Embrace nature, exercise, and the beauty of the winter season.

A couple inches of snow fell early this morning. Groomed a 4km loop. After it froze down, skied one lap skate then one lap no track classic with Jonell. Although there were some really nice sections, didn't feel it was safe enough skiing to open to the public. It's always fun to have bonus grooming and skiing this late in the year.

We wrapped up a fun few days of late season skiing getting the most of the storm over the weekend. Snuck in one more grooming run yesterday afternoon but missed the timing a little. Best skiing today was on the non groomed trails where a few diehards enjoyed the crust segments. Trails are now closed. We will continue to monitor weather forecasts and ready to groom any late season snowstorm if conditions are right. Thanks everyone who came out the past few days....Just Ski.

A pretty fantastic day on the trails. Wow. Morning low dipped to 3 degrees setting up last nights grooming nicely. Groomed on Skaters Waltz in the morning cleaning up the edges. After grooming met up with a season pass holder to ski the classic trails. Just a phenomenal mid March day with cold dry snow. The sun was starting to do its thing after the noon hour but still very skiable and temperature never got above 30. Lots of happy skiers out today and one of the busiest March days ever. The sun did deteriorate the tracks early afternoon before clouds moving in saving the set for late afternoon skiers. The skate deck held out well and an evening groom cleaned up as much as possible. We will have the trails open in the morning, best bet would be skating on skaters waltz. Lots of open spots in the tracks and warm temps tomorrow with make skiing pretty tough after noon. Very grateful for a few extra bonus days!

13km of trail open. 9km tracked for classic, 4km groomed skate. 3-4" of new snow the past 24 hours. Grooming this afternoon on Sap Run, Sukkerbusk, a short loop to the west and the easy loop of JibFly setting track. 4km of Skaters Waltz packed and combed. Considering there wasn't much base left before this new snow (which was very dense and moisture laden), groomed out nice. There are thin areas and recommended to not use best skis. Classic skied after grooming and was really nice skiing on cold dry powder. The trails are very skiable. JibFly loop had thinnest coverage. Sukkerbusk was best. Temperatures look to be below freezing Sunday but if the sun is out, the snow will get sticky in the afternoon. Best to ski before 1pm. There is no trail fee to ski the remainder of the year...enjoy and Just Ski!

Excellent spring skiing! Sugarbush certainly had small patches that were icy or bare but most of the southern trails were in decent shape for rock skis. Take extra caution on the big downhills. Surprised by how much snow is left- get out while you can! We parked at the Onion River Rd trailhead and skied from L-K-J-I and back.

Trails are still looking pretty good. Classic skied the Pincushion Mt Loop, Canyon Curves and the Snowman loops. Classic tracks are in good condtion, the skate lane is a little variable on the downhills due to the sunny spots melting more than the shady spots. Used Start Oslo blue kick wax over blue klister. Wax worked well.

Really great skiing today. I started at about 1:30 and it was perfect. Skiing the fresh grooming and the grooming from a few days old was good. Fast conditions but there was some spots where there was rocks and bare ground but they were easy avoided. I used my race skis but I would definitely recommend B skis. So many miles of trails! With Bear Cub and Ox Cart trails now beautifully groomed, in addition to the core trails around Bearskin Lodge -- the variety is back! Challenging trails and easier trails, climbing and flats. The shade from the deep woods protected most areas in spite of the warm March sun. I skied until about 3:30 pm and while the trails were getting slower, the cover was untouched. Summer Home Road and Campground grooms were freshened up today, keeping those in perfect condition (but losing the frolicking moose tracks that decorated Summer Home Road yesterday afternoon!).

Fantastic! When we heard Bearskin groomed this morning we packed the car and headed north. Skied all afternoon on skin skis which were perfect in spring conditions. All the trails we skied were freshly rolled with very nice tracks. Beaver Dam trail had a small section that was newly rolled but the tracks were not new and had fresh snow in them. As we "broke trail" on the old tracks we started to stick but fortunately we had a spray with us to quickly apply to the skins and then we were good to go for the rest of the afternoon. Love this trail system - nicely built, well laid out, great maps and grooming. Thank you!

Minnesota Ski Season is not over! Recovery from last week's melting conditions and raiin is well underway. We skied yesterday starting at Bearskin Lodge and found the core trails surprisingly skiable. We skied the same core trails today and found perfect ski conditions. Where the groomers haven't been able to really work the snow the base cover is still solid, but icy. We were sorry to miss some of the best climbs because of ice, but they'll be back! Fresh snow was falling as we finished our day.

We groomed Logging Camp, Red Pines, and Deer Mouse on the north side and Ridge Run, Upper Beaver Dam, Moose Pasture on the south side. Bearskin groomed several sections on their half as well. Definitely spring skiing conditions right now after the rain and warm weather over the weekend, but trails mostly held up very well. The north side trails groomed up great. The south side trails are getting thin. We had to lift our tiller in several locations on Upper Beaver Dam and Ridge Run where rocks have started poking through and bare spots are present. Still very skiable but keep an eye out for those locations. West-End Logging Camp, which is our rockiest trail, and Wolf Point are both currently closed due to excessive protruding rocks and frozen flooding. As long as we can groom, we will continue to until the end of the month. Our grooming will cease on March 27th. Bearskin will groom until April 1st.

This afternoon we groomed Overlook, Highlands, Ham Lake, North Star, Upper West End, Lonley Lake, Amperage, Big Pine and Little Pine, so the whole system was groomed today. Everything groomed up really well with a skate lane and a classic track on all of the trails. Just finished a long classic ski on the trails groomed last night during the transition back to cold. The tracks were quite good, not icy, and dusted with a thin layer of crystal snow. I plan to return with classic again this evening, but skating would also work as the groomer created sufficient surface to hold an edge. The sun has also contributed to additional edging potential in exposed areas. This place is a very fine place to say good bye to winter.

Just finished a long classic ski on these trails which included a long steep descent down Highland trail. The classic tracks are in good spring conditions, firm, with just a little give. There is sufficient softness on the steep downhills by which to control speed and prevent blackouts. Probably better to stay with classic until the temperature cools. The base is firm and deep in most places and I imagine they will be skiing here for awhile as many of the trails are protected by the north exposures and mature tree cover. The sun exposed trails I saw remained very good, and the rain caused minimal to no damage to trail quality. If you want to hang on to winter a little longer, perhaps the Gunflint could be your ticket. I have two more days.

Much of it was descent skiing. There are areas in swamps that had melted into large puddles and refroze. Small rocks are poking through and some bare spots. So, definitely Spring skiing conditions but still fun and mostly snow covered but not with good skis.

By 3 o'clock today an inch and a half of new snow arrived and it is still snowing. There are no tracks that were visible however, the skiing was delightful. The hard packed base with fresh snow on top makes you feel like you are floating through the forest. Depending on how much snow accumulates will be the determining factor if grooming is to occur this week. Don't let that deter you though because it is indeed beautiful spring conditions.

In above-freezing temperatures spring skiing is good. Still 80% snow-covered - a few bare spots in the bogs where the tops of the hummock are losing snow. Debris on the trail is increasing, but didn't cause any problems since we were using waxless and the debris has sunk below the surface of the snow. Tracks are disappearing however with folks skiing on them they are somewhat still visible.

In above freezing temperatures spring skiing is very good. Still 99.9% snow-covered - just a few bare spots in the bogs where the tops of the hummock are losing snow. Debris on the trail is increasing, but didn't cause any problems since in the melty conditions it is mostly sunken in. Tracks are still visible and useable, but they are shallow and offer no real support. We have no plans for grooming through the weekend, but believe the snow coverage to stay with us for awhile (even if we start gaining more bare spots). In frozen (<32°F) weather, trails will be icy and rough - wait for the warm.

Star, Willow Creek and Frog Town were in poor but not quite impassable conditions just before noon. It was a combination of frozen corn and ice that soften up once you started the Frogtown climb. Snow was frequently really dirty. Ruts were only a problem in one or two spots; otherwise they had washed out. There was a near total break in the snow cover besides the pond on the left before the 90 degree left hand turn into the Frog Town climb. I was cautiously snowplowing on the ice to make sure I stopped before the break when a U of M X-country-jacketed young man flew by me on the sliver of snow outside the classic track. There was another sliver of snow you had to transit as you made the 90 degree turn into the southside Star climb. I was able to consistently skate that climb despite several patches of ice but chickened out and snow plowed the start of the descent because of ice beside the narrow strip of snow and I didn't trust myself to make the right hand turn back into the trailhead bldg if I carried any speed into it. You had to be desperate to ski to attempt it today. The out-bound leg with all the dirt slowing you was a real grind. In-bound was okay if you didn't let the speed and fear of catching a rut unnerve you.

What a difference grooming makes. Yesterday the trail was an icy, but totally skiable fast track; while today it was rutted mess. I skied one loop and then quit. There are some bare patches on the trail, so while I hope this is not true, Three Rivers may have decided to stop grooming for the season (IDK).

Star, Willow Creek and Froog Town were groomed and in good to fair condition. It was mid 30's and grey with a strong north/northwest wind. Got to give the groomers credit for keeping the trails operating. Dirt is bleeding thru in spots on Willow Creek outbound and on the Star spur inbound to the trailhead building next to the parking lot. Probably was still ok for good skis but I had one ski/stride inexplicably stop as I merged from Willow Creek to Frog Town outbound and I couldn't see a leaf that otherwise might have done that. Portion of the spur trail south of the hill in the middle of the Star loop had lots of leaves. Willow Creek climb was mostly frozen corduroy with snert that really slowed you. On the other hand, Willow Creek inbound coming off the top of Frog Town was really fast. So despite the headwind and the slow climb on Willow Creek outbound I was able to equal my 2nd fastest pace of the season. This was my 45th ski of the season and maybe my last. Thanks to groomers and Three Rivers parks for providing the extended season.

Trail is now rated poor but this morning I would say it skated a little better than that. The snow is getting thin in spots and dirt is showing through but still generally avoidable and most of the trail that is still open is better than poor in my opinion. I would give it an overall fair rating for now, but Hyland probably has higher standards than some trails. With no new snow the days are numbered.

I skied at 8:30 AM. In spite of 70F temps yesterday, the world class grooming had the track in very skiable condition. There were a few icy spots to navigate but overall quite good considering the weather.

Groomed through frogtown. It was very good except the wind blew a lot of leaves into the track. My twin skins worked great. The front desk said they are playing the grooming day to day. Apparently they groom at 10 pm so they evaluate the conditions then hope it stays below freezing at night and warm up in morning. The skating looked good at 10 am.

Star, Willow Creek and Frog Town were groomed and in good to very good condition at my 9:05 start. It was high 30's sunny with a strong south wind. Willow Creek and Frog Town climbs had corned; otherwise very good conditions. The profile of the Willow Creek climb has changed because of the way groomers have moved around the snow to maintain trail integrity; It's no longer as steep. As usual, I was looking down on the climb and was waiting to hit the final, steeper section and all of a sudden I found myself leveling out on top. Lot of leaves being blown on the trail. I was rounding the curve next to the shack on my 2nd lap when i caught one right under my left foot and went down. Talked to front desk after my ski and they said groomers would continue to make assessment in the morning about whether to groom daily. It was wonderful that they got out and did it this morning.

Fresh grooming. Came back for classic around 7am this morning. Trails are holding up well. Classic tracks were reliable for downhills. Saw a few speckly sections in the tracks but they looked and felt like ice this morning which made for easy gliding. Really fun to be out in such great conditions today!

I skied at 9 AM. The skate deck was firm with a thin layer of soft snow on top. A couple of hills had soft, thick snow that was slower than the rest, but for the most part, the trail was in great shape. The grooming was excellent. Thanks groomers.

Other than the portions in the shade, Star, Willow Creek and Frog Town were soft rutted, mash potatos. It was 37 degrees and sunny when I got on the trail at 3:50 pm. I did 1 1/2 laps. I was surprised given the impediments that I could still maintain a moderately fast pace but it wasn't particularly fun. Asked the desk staff if they would groom overnight and they said groomers would make assessment when they come in tomorrow morning. Thanks to the groomers and Three Rivers for a surprisingly good season given the absence of natural snow if today was the end of skiing.

I got out pretty late today around 5:00 pm. The south facing trails had a lot of mashed potatoes, and the classic tracks were groomed a little past the start of the Star Loop from the Visitor Center. They were an expected combo of ice and slush, but I still had a fun spring ski. The final day of grooming at Hyland was March 10th last year. So, at least we had more days this season. Let's hope for over 50" of snow next year. Thanks to the groomers for all their hard work this season.

Fun spring skiing today. Tracks were set and pretty clean, except for a couple of low spots on Frog Hollow, where they were wearing through to dirt. (Scenic Foothills is closed off ) Except for those, there was a good base. By 2pm it was getting soft, but still very skiable. Great sun, plenty of folks out.

Skate skied the man-made loop at Hyland Lake Park. Scenic Foothills and Boulder Ridge are closed. The conditions were firm and fast. The grooming was excellent. There were quite a few other skiers out making the most of what could be one of the last days of the season.

Started (and ended) in the lower stadium. It was a mess of lumpy crust, ending with thin ice before the Green Meadow connection. The bottom of Jim's hill was bare ground. I gave up pretty quickly. [ As announced previously, they are done with grooming at Wirth this season -- Ed. ]

After the recent warm weather that melted most of our snow limited grooming was done on the 4 inches that fell yesterday. I didn't expect the skating to be as good as it was, especially the Wilderness trails. They were flat, fast and very scenic. Cover was thin but I never got hung up on rocks or dirt. Skating was especially nice because no tracks were set allowing for plenty of width for skating. Temp stayed below freezing. Also skied the 5k loop on MWP usual trails. Had a great ski today.

Groomers got out and packed in a 5k loop around Silver Strider, Tower Rd, Nepco's Cruise back to Tower Rd. It's true late season ski conditions out there. Definitely bring out the rock skis and expect lumpy uneven conditions. But...we are skiing in late March so we'll take it! We lost almost all of the snow base over the last few weeks so expect the trail and tracks to be down to dirt and ice in spots. It might be a better day for classic than skate due to the thin base. We only recommend skiing what we groomed as there could be down trees and slush in other parts of the trails system. The Chalet will be closed so plan accordingly.

Fantastic skate conditions. We skied all the trails with the exception of the expert trails that were close to the chalet as they were not groomed. Found the skate lanes fast and firm. The groomers did a nice job loosening the icy snow and it created a fun skate deck. I would highly recommend skating as it doesn't get much faster. The classic tracks were icy.

Swedetown is still standing strong after the three day warmup. Highs only reached about 50 degrees as the Big Lake helped keep temperatures in check. Temp plummeted to 20 degrees this morning and the Husky went out and busted up all the ice, resulting is some pretty nice skating! There was plenty of loose snow to get an edge, glide was great, and speed was medium-fast. You can see from the picture that we still have ample base - in the 18 to 24 inch range.

They either forgot to roll or comb all of the trails before grooming or got 3 ft of snow overnight because the trails have not been this soft in at least 5 years. I skied the first half of the wolverine loop and the full cliffs trail skate. When that wasn't working, I skied a bit more of the wolverine loop at the start class but only in the parts where other people have gone and started packing it down. Not worth skiing today unless you want to snowshoe on your skis. Wait till they groom at least once more.

Nordic trails south of Palmyra got about 3" of wet dense snow. I didn't expect much, but was pleasantly surprised how well the trails skied which had no previous base. There was some melting as the sun came out by 3 pm. Only the flat purple and brown trails to the south are good as the other hilly trails have issues with rocks in low snow conditions. Nice afternoon, especially with the sun later. Don't expect much, leave with a big smile.

Skied the whole trail. Trail was in good condition when I started. Tracks were soft, deck was softer. Some bare spots and some debris, but easy to get around. By the time I finished, the sun had melted through parts of the track down to bare ground, significantly deteriorated from when I set out.

Wow! Kudos to Christopher for grooming! Thank you! This trail is our first to be groomed and last to be groomed each year. Great classic track, few bare ground areas easily avoided using skate deck. Snow was beautiful on the trees. Skate deck firm and well covered. What a delightful ski. Thanks again!

Conditions continue to be great at Spirit Mountain Nordic. I started at noon with a temperature of 40° and classic skied with skin skis. The trails continue to be groomed daily and are an excellent shape. The 2-3 foot base is holding up with very little shrinkage with the nighttime temperatures going below freezing. Thank you very much groomers for continuing to maintain this great trail system.

Great conditions at Spirit Mountain Nordic today with fresh grooming. Used my skin skis at noon when the temp was 38 softening the course enough to give me decent grip. Looks like a 1-3 foot base still. Exciting course with great views of the St Louis River estuary. Should be a while until the fat lady sings.
