Black Lake LoppetResults

With over 75 skiers, Sunday's Black Lake Loppet was the biggest race of the ski season in the Bemidji area, -and not a day too soon as the temperature hit 50 on Monday. Skiers were greeted with an intense snow squall during warm ups but by the time most skiers went out the sun was shining and the melting new snow made for a slow course. Dan Doemier won the wood ski division and Doug Johnson won the handicap event wearing the same skis he wore in the 1983 Birkie. In the actual time divisions Ethan Youso won the men's division and Muriel Gilman the women's title. Wanda Arenz was 13th across the line and has the privilege of hosting the 6 1/2 foot traveling trophy for the next year. Young Louis Saxton once again impressed the crowd by skating BACKWARDS the last 75 yards of the race to the finish line. 186 donuts from Raphael's Bakery were consumed and a nice stash of cash and food items were collected for the Bemidji Food Shelf.
