Wisconsin High School Nordic Ski Championship Sites Named
Oneida County has a long history of cross country skiing and has been selected for both the 2007 and 2008 Wisconsin High School Nordic Ski Championships. Rhinelander will host in 2007 at the Northwoods Golf Course ski trails. The 7.5-kilometer course will be a challenge for the anticipated 400-500 skiers from over 20 teams. With two days of racing using both freestyle and classic technique in a pursuit format, the racing forecast is fast and furious. As the home club of Olympian Chris Cook, members are anxious to share their organization, expertise, and enthusiasm with the rest of the high school teams in Wisconsin. The club has expanded, refined, and tested the new race course with approval from the state coaches association and positive comments from racers at last year’s pre event competitions. Plans are underway for an exciting weekend, Saturday, February 10 and Sunday, February 11, 2007.Minocqua Winter Park will be the host venue for the premier event of high school racing in 2008. With over 75 kilometer of Pisten Bully groomed trails to choose from, the 7.5-kilometer championship course will feature undulating glacially refined terrain. The popular lake resort area is preparing for an action packed weekend, Friday, February 8 and Saturday, February 9, 2008. Area accommodations and restaurants will be offering special packages for teams as plans are being made for the return of the championship to the site that started it all, 27 years ago.
