Plenty of Snow for the 44 th Annual Great Bear Chase

With a snowfall total of more than 225” and a solid base of more than two feet, the 44 th annual UP Health System Great Bear Chase is ready to host marathons and skiathlons on March 8, 2025. The race takes place on the Swedetown trails in Calumet, Michigan.

Great Bear Chase events include 20km and 50km skiathlons, and separate classic and freestyle races of 10km, 25km, and 50km. All racers receive the 2025 Great Bear Chase t-shirt and a post-race pasty feast.

“We’ve been blessed with abundant snow this year,” says race director Angela Luskin. “Our groomers have been very busy since the end of December, and they look forward to providing an excellent trail for our March 8 events.”

The UP Health System Great Bear Chase is a major fundraiser for the Swedetown trails. All of the proceeds go directly into improving and maintaining the trail system, which includes 29km of ski trails, 15km of snow bike trails, 10km of snowshoe trails, and 25 miles of purpose-built singletrack mountain bike trails.
