Minnesota State
Meet Coverage
February 13, 2004
Under a beautiful blue sky and plenty of sunshine, the
Minnesota State Meet kicked off Friday morning at Giants
Ridge. One of the biggest surprises of the day was in
the women's classical race as St. Louis Park's Katie
Klepinski bested a top field of challengers to take
the classical title. Winona's Garrett Heath posted the
fastest boys time to win the classical crown and a nice
cushion in the pursuit race. With temperatures warming
into the mid 20s, the conditions were absolutely perfect
for the afternoon freestyle pursuit event. Heath extended
his lead to win the pursuit title, but was denied an
event swept as Armstrong's Joe Sem posted the fastest
freestyle time. In the girls pursuit, Hopkin's Shannon
Bergstedt quickly moved up the field and eventually
off the front to capture the pursuit crown. Kari Lunemann
of Grand Rapids gave Berdstedt a good run for the pursuit
title, with Lunemann taking the freestyle title. The
team titles were the last to be announced: Grand Rapids
girls had the most consistent line up today, with sophmore
Anna Roessler having a super day to help capture the
team title. Duluth East boys lived up to their #1 ranking,
topping St. Louis Park and Forest Lake for the team
trophy. Over 80 photos from the freestyle pursuit races
online now, along with more than 160 from the classical
races. Plus photosets from Dave Johnson and Ron/Susie
