Minnesota State Meet
Coverage
February 14, 2003
While the favorites, Winona's Garrett Heath and Hopkin's Courtney
Dauwalter easily won the overall pursuit titles, there was
still a lot of excitement at the 2003 State Meet. Tim Damrow,
Roseville, had some revenge on the recent rankings, showing
he was clearly the tops of the rest of the boys field with
an especially strong skate leg. The most incredible performance
of the day arguably came from Elk River's Nicole Olson who
stormed from 12th in the classical to second overall in the
pursuit and stopped a Dauwalter sweep by posting the top freestyle
time. The boys team title turned into an interesting three
way horse race as Duluth East made a run for it. In the end,
the St. Louis Park boys grabbed the title, with Grand Rapids
barely edging out Duluth East. Hopkins girls won the team
title, while Stillwater and a strong Mesabi East team battled
for second, with Stillwater taking it by a mere 3 points.
Full results linked in now, plus more than 200 photos from
the freestyle race along with another 200 from the classical
races. Also photos from Dave Johnson.

days of racing on Sunday at Schwan Center in Trego. Rhinelander
and Spooner boys had a tight race for the pursuit title, with
Rhinelander taking it by only two points. Rhinelander girls
won the team title as well. Wausau-Newman's Bill Bowler was
tops in the boys pursuit event, winning by over a minute.
Rosy Walsh, Rhinelander, lead the girls field by nearly two
minutes.. Results online now along with a link for photos

Section 7 Results
February 8, 2003
Minnesota High School sectionals wrapped up on Friday with
the Section 7 meet at Giants Ridge. Duluth East boys return
to State after winning the team title with Chris Lund leading
the way as he took all three individual titles. The Mesabi
East and Ely girls had a close fight for the team title, with
each team placing four skiers in the top 10. Mesabi East won
the title by just 4 points (Ely advanced 4 skiers to State).
Ely's Jenna Klein won the pursuit title. Results online now
along with photos from Dave Johnson.
Section 6 Results
February 7, 2003
It was an even colder day at Baker Park, with the start of
the Section 6 championships pushed back to allow for warmer
temperatures. Hopkins' Courtnet Dauwalter left no doubts that
she is ready for the State Meet, sweeping the girls events
to easily win the pursuit title. The Hopkins girls placed
six team members in the top 11 of all events on the way to
the team title. Eden Prairie boys had solid consistency to
take the team title. Hopkins' Paul Salipante and Burnsville's
Bryan Gastonguay battled for the pursuit title, bringing it
down to a final sprint with Salipante winning by 4/10 of a
second! Results online now, plus over 160 photos.
Section 4 Results
February 6, 2003
Under bright sun and cold winds, Section 4 was able to hold
their championship at Baker Park. Number 2 ranked Nicole Olson,
Elk River, warmed up for State by dominating the girls event,
winning the pursuit title by nearly two minutes! Buffalo girls
won the team title. St. Cloud Cathedral's Bob Baldwin won
the boys classic and pursuit title, while Maple Grove won
the team title. Results online now, plus over 160 photos.
Section 2 Results
February 6, 2003
Section 2 held their meet at Giants Ridge on Wednesday. Forest
Lake and Stillwater boys locked up so tightly, they had to
go to the tie-breaker system to determine which team qualified
for state: Stillwater. Lorin Skoglund, Forest Lake, put together
solid classical and freestyle victories to win the boys pursuit
title. Stillwater girls won the team title. Forest Lake's
Laura Edlund and Stillwater's Cayley Baird put on one heck
of a battle for the pursuit title with Baird narrowly grabbing
the victory. Results online now.
Section 8 Results
February 5, 2003
It was Grand Rapids day at Maplelag on Wednesday for the Section
8 meet. Grand Rapids won the boys and girls team titles, as
well as all of the individual titles except the girls classical,
which went in an upset to Bemidji's Andrea Smith. The story
behind the results was Grand Rapids winning the team titles
without the help of two of their star skiers, #2 ranked Ben
Bryne and #7 ranked Brynden Manbeck. Expect to see both at
the State Meet, where Rapids will need their full firepower.
Results online now, plus nearly 150 photos from Jay Richards.
Section 3 Results
February 4, 2003
On a cold and windy course at Como, Section 3 teams competed
for the right to head to State. Roseville's Tim Damrow won
both the boys classical and freestyle events, but had competition
from teammate Mike Drinane in the classic race, and St. Paul
Central's Rody Lageson in the skate. Roseville boys won the
team title. The Roseville girls also won the team title, but
St. Paul Central gave them a run for their money. Kathleen
DeWahl, St. Paul Central, won both events. Full results online
now, and over 150 photos recently posted.
Section 1 Results
February 4, 2003
Section 1 held their meet at Giants Ridge on Tuesday. Lakeville
girls won the team title, powered by solid performances from
Sarah Panzer, the incredible Yetzer sisters, and Kelly Smith.
Hastings Katie Walker won the pursuit title. Number 1 ranked
Garret Heath, Winona, won the boys events, but had some competition
from Hastings David Saunders. Hastings won the boys team title.

at Giants Ridge. Armstrong and St. Louis Park girls had an
extremely close battle for the team title, with Armstrong
taking it by only 4 points. Breck's Shaina Short posted the
top freestyle time, which combined with a good classical leg
gave her the pursuit title. In the boys races, St. Louis Park
showed they are ready for State, posting a perfect score of
788 by taking the top four places in both events. Andy Cheeseboro
lead the way, winning both races. Full results online now.
