3rd Annual Most Improved High School Skier of the Year Contest

It's that time again -- time for high school coaches to nominate the skier on their team that they feel is the most improved skier of the year. In most cases this is not necessarily the best skier on their team, but rather that skier who made the biggest improvement this year. (OK, Lindsey Weier should win it hands down -- but she's got her prize: the U.S. Olympic Team!)

Winners

Female winner:
Sarah Haverkamp, Freshman, Henry Sibley

Male winner:
Danny Johnson, Senior, Detroit Lakes

Read the complete write-up on the contest, including a list of the runners up, and full nomination text for the winners.

Prizes
Toko/Yoko Toko offers one of the most popular wax line-ups, along with the best gloves in the world from Yoko. Each winning skier will receive:
Toko Thermo belt, a Yoko hat, and pair of Yoko binders
Hoigaards Hoigaards has been a strong supporter of Minnesota High School skiing, and offers a huge selection of cross-country products. The coach that nominated a winning skier will receive:
  A beautiful wooden waxing form

Minnesota High School State Meet

February 15, 2002
Hopkins used a combination of fast skis and fast skiers to dominate the Minnesota State Meet at Giants Ridge on Friday. The race of the day was hammered out by Courtney Dauwalter, who started eighth in the pursuit, nearly 30 seconds back, and rocketed to the only sub-14 minute time to take the overall pursuit title, as well as the freestyle title. Hopkins girls placed three skiers in the top five freestyle to help secure the overall team title. Garrott Kuzzy, ranked #1 all season, swept the boys titles, as Hopkins won the boys title. Full results linked in now, 150 photos from the classic race, over 130 from the freestyle race, plus photosets from Dave Johnson and Carl Jarvi.

Wisconsin State H.S. Championships Results

February 10, 2002
In what must have been one whale of a race, Madison West's Ben Cline and Hayward's Donvan Dums battled for the boys overall pursuit title. In the freestyle race, Cline edged Dums by 1 second, and then bumped up that lead with a 6 second victory in the classical race. (Flashback: two years ago, Ben Cline was our first receipt of the Most Improved High School Skier of the Year.) Maria Stuber of Waukeska West won the girls overall title. Team titles went out to the Haywards boys, and Lakeland Girls -- both teams winning by wide margins. Full results linked in now.

Sections Coverage

February 7, 2002
Section 7: In the closest battle so far in Sections, the Duluth East and Ely girls came right down to the end, with only a three point margin of victory for the Duluth East team. Duluth East boys had a much easier time winning the team title, as Duluth East's Bjorn Batdorf used a dominating classic leg to take the overall title. Full results online now, along with photos from Mark Boyce and Carl Jarvi.
Section 4: St. Cloud Cathedral and Wayzata boys had an extremely close race for the team title, with St. Cloud Cathedral winning by only 7 points. Nichole Olson put together two very strong races to win the overall title and helped lead the Elk River girls to the team title. Full results online now.
Previously posted:
Section 8: The Grand Rapids boys proved they're ready to challenge for the state title, sweeping the top four spots in both races to notch a "perfect" score in the team competition. Not to be out done, the Grand Rapids girls nearly matched the boys output, missing just one point (in the freestyle race) on the way to take the girls title. Full results, plus a large photoset from Jay Richards, online now.
Section 6: It was all Hopkins in the Section 6 championships as the #1 ranked boys and girls team cruised to the overall titles. Garrott Kuzzy showed he'll be the easy favorite for the state title, edging out teammate Dan Skold (#2 ranked) over 40 seconds for the pursuit title. Courtney Dauwalter also appears to be ready to challenge for the state title, using a superior classic leg to win the overall title by almost a minute. Full results online now.
Section 5: St. Louis Park and Armstrong girls had a close duel for the team title, with Armstrong coming out on top by just 9 points. The St. Louis Park team, composed of a number of young skiers (including 8th and 9th grade skiers), put in a strong performance in taking the boys team title. Full results online now.
Section 2: Blaine's Dan Whipple came from behind to overtake Doug Stafki (Forest Lake) to win the pursuit boys title. Forest Lake teammates Stephanie Howe and Laura Edlund finished 1-2, respectively, in the classic and freestyle races. A few photos from Carl Jarvi of the top skiers, and full results online now.
Section 1: Hastings Lindsay Williams (#2 ranked) dominated the girls field, winning the classic race by over two minutes and then extended that lead in the freestyle race, to win the pursuit title by 3:30. Number 4 ranked Heath Garrett of Winona had a strong showing as well, winning both the classic and freestyle races to easily take the pursuit title. Hastings won both team titles. Full results online now.
Section 3: SPA's Steve Scott and Roseville's Tim Damrow had a great battle for first, with Scott winning the classic race but losing to Damrow in the pursuit. Some photos from Dave Johnson, and full results online now.
