Trail Detail
Notes
The Lester-Amity trail offers 15K of varied terrain for beginner to experienced skiers through pine, aspen, and birch forests. An additional 3K circles the Lester Park Golf Course and is accessible from the main Lester-Amity Trail. The openness of the golf course offers an excellent place for beginning cross-country skiers, and several short cuts are available. There is also a 5K trail portion that is lit in the mornings and evenings.Trail Reports

Lester is rolled and tracked! We only skied A-B twice (fresh corduroy was soft), but coverage was complete and someone else had headed farther up. Tracks looked great; if it firms up, conditions will be as good as ever. Thanks, City of Duluth, I thought I'd have to wait until next year to have this much fun!

What a crazy winter! They rolled most of outer loop up to H and then it's skied in the rest of the way except for the side loops after F. J hill and L loop are not skied in and not rolled. Extra Blue skiing tonight. Classic is best. Pretty soft for skating. Thanks to the City of Duluth for grooming. Maybe they'll come again before the end. I forgot how fun skiing is!

Just finished the big loop on backcountry nowax skis. I was only the third skier between H,I, and J, but good old time backcountry skiing. When I got back to the main junction (A) the groomer had gone through, so it was rolled ( I don't know how far up)! Best skiing of the year.

Welp, it is not impossible to ski Lester, but it is questionably enjoyable and sometimes slightly terrifying. Lost lots of what snow was left after yesterday's sunny 46F degrees. It's not safe until things have softened up after the freeze at night. Only worth attempting if you are sufficiently desperate/lazy, which I guess I was today. The downhills are all problematically bare now, with some especially bad/muddy (the I downshills and the downhill before F, etc). Definitely did not even attempt J or the chalet loop as they were bare well before yesterday. I skipped the lower A loop as I suspect it is very weedy from the parking lot on down. In short...it lasted longer than it had any business lasting, but would no longer recommend, even as a marginal option. :(.

Pretty sketchy. Deck was hard and icy. Little to no grip. Downhills were fast and unpredictable with patches of dirt, rocks, culverts and roots to navigate around. Long downhill of the Chalet loop is mostly gone so I passed. Same with the steep downhill on L loop. Downhill into the lower playground is gauanteed to get you skiing on gravel and the climb up out of playground is about 80% bare. Other than that the trails are great!

Bit the bullet and put the sticky red wax on my skis. Worked fairly well. Bare spots on trail and only well-worn short segments of skied-in trail. Still, I was surprised that it was still skiable. Photos show bottom of hill before D-loop and attractive, bird-shaped birch scales, the remains of birch catkins.

I skied the main loop + D and I. Nonexistent tracks, the skate deck is a mixture of icy and soft firm slushy snow along the edges. Many very thin spots and debris along the way. You can get around most of them OK but, especially at the culverts, you just have to go over them. There's still time outside, if you go! Enjoy!

Lester is a lot more fun to skate at 24F vs. 1F, who knew? Lots of thin spots, but if you pay attention you can dodge them. The return from the north unlit loops just before the F cutoff is pretty sketchy—if you're wondering who snowplowed all the way down that hill, it was me and I'm glad I did. Best skiing is the B-C mini loop.

Went out to the golf course this afternoon because the city claimed they groomed the trail this morning (statement was "packed this morning (some grass poking through)". I think their definition of grass is different than my definition. Some scrub trees poking through the trail in various places, some large enough to use to roast a marshmallow on. Super lumpy, soft. There are some tracks, but actual grass is poking through. Lots of weird bumps in the trail - some from vehicles, some from people, some the culverts the trail crosses. I didn't see anything that looked like dirt or gravel though.

Fast skiing at night. I used my skate skis today, came on Sunday and went classic skiing. Has seen some wear since Sunday with classic tracks not visible. Fast skate skiing with wear and some spots of dirt/leaves showing but able to easily avoid without concern.
