Notes

Trails are on the golf course. Some nice hills but most of the course is pretty exposed. There is one back leg that is quite shaded and seems to hold snow long after the rest of the course loses it. Rentals at the chalet.

[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied at Como on Friday Night and Sunday evening. Conditions were good on Friday if not a bit cold and they were a bit less on Sunday. All in all the coverage is fantastic and the classic tracks looked great. The skate deck had some snow ruts in it from heavy use and was a bit crowned(?), maybe uneven. It is hard to describe. No issues for damage or ability to ski for a nice easy one but I could see how others may complain as your skis could get squirrely. Parking lot was absolutely jammed with the youth XC classes and Mt Como downhill courses happening. Thankful that I can walk from my house. Would suggest on high traffic days to park and walk. Solid B- mostly just due to the massive usage over the beautiful weekend. Continue to be impressed and thankful to the wonderful St Paul Parks crew for grooming.

I thought that with all the snow we got last week skiing would be good at Como. It looked great for classic, but skate was a different matter. The skate lane was too hardpacked and squirrely for me, probably from heavy use on Saturday. After one lap I decided why waste such a gorgeous day not having fun when the Univ of MN Golf Course is so close. I had hoped that now that we're paying to ski at Como there would be more frequent grooming. It was disappointing given evidence of recent grooming on the downhill slopes and on a new path cutting across the south loop (which was excellent).

The best conditions in years at Como Park today. Lots of snow, not a bare spot to be seen. Perhaps best of all the trails were beautifully set with nice even skate deck and what looked like ideal classic tracks. I only wish I had more energy today to ski this trail.

The classic tracks are in great shape and hardening off! Very enjoyable ski. The freestyle segment looked very inviting and well rolled. The places where the classic tracks usually wash out, at the bottom of hills, are not tracked which is helping to maintain the integrity of the classic tracks.

Grooming
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Como cross country ski trails were groomed this afternoon. A new classic trail was set and the skate deck is in great shape. Get out and enjoy these fabulous trail conditions while you can.

Night
Firsthand: Both
[ Good skis ]
My Three Rivers Pass expires and I am not going to renew it this year. So much good skiing right here in St Paul this year — no need for me to travel from the east side of town. Como was as best I have seen it since moving to neighborhood in '94. Firm base for skating, well set tracks for classic, low spots filled in, some of the sloped areas (where it feels like your left leg needs to be longer) are leveled out. And hey, nearly a full moon night. Lucky to be in St Paul this year with Battle Creek, Highland Park and Como — haven't made it to Phalen yet. I really appreciate the grooming effort and the groomer's reports. Thank you!

About 4" of overnight snow was being groomed with the big PB as I left at about 2 pm. New tracks were also being set. I stopped a group of about 8 from going for a walk on the newly groomed trail and repaired their damage.

Morning
Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
Skied the entire track around noon today. It appeared to have been rolled prior to the last snowfall, so still a good 4 inches to plow through. No tracks set. The PistenBully was out on Mt. Como while I was skiing but was parked by the garage when I left.

Observation
[ Trails Open: All ]
I walked over to the course this morning and no grooming. I went back this afternoon and snowshoed, and the trails were rolled. No tracks set. It looked like the wet snow compacted well.

Trail was rolled today but not groomed and no classic track. The trail is not very level with many bumps and tire tracks. The snow is beautiful out there, but it is extremely wet and sticky. It made for a good workout.
