2022-2023 season
Reports 3 to 12 of 54    Month: Mar | Feb | Jan | Dec

Firsthand: Freestyle
[ Trails Open: All, Good skis ]
We started skiing around 11 am at 34°. The powdery snow cover is still present in most places. No bare ground was seen but occasional ice patch was crossed by double polling. When we finished, the ice patches were even getting just a little bit soft. Great spring skiing. You may want to time your ski for the warm-up or the cool off of the day.

Observation
[ Trails Open: All ]
After yesterdays rain I wanted to check the trail condition to see if it was skiable. It appears the 3/4" of snow that fell as the temperature was going down stuck to the icy top layer. I walked part of the trail and I believe the skaters will be able to catch an edge. There are no usable classic tracks left but touring classics will work just fine. If I didn't have chores to do I'd be out there skiing this afternoon! Be careful on Hwy Q, it's icy!

The woods and trail look beautiful for this mid Jan evening. (*checks calendar...wait just a minute here...I guess this is what the UP looks like in mid March). Skate deck was groomed but soft. Don't know why but I was expecting more moisture in the snow, but joking aside it was dry. Zero debris, definitely good skis. I hopped in the track here and there; deep and a bit faster. Looks great all along the trail.

I did not get to the I loop but it appears everything was groomed again today. The fresh snow really improved the tracks and skate deck. The skate deck was a little soft but should firm up.

The two groomers were finishing when we arrived at 1PM. Snow and classical tracks were new, but a little soft for a bigger skier. The deck was fairly fast firm, but may get icy if it freezes. Only a few wet spots. Great Spring skiing!

"Just happy to be out skiing" which is ski talk for: conditions were a little tough; pretty icy in many spots. The area by the chalet was pretty intimidating, but the northern trails (flyway, lillyhammer, etc) were ok and even decent in some spots. Happy for more snow coming!

Afternoon
Observation
Took a road trip to Eau Claire for the night hoping to ski here. There's less snow here than in the twin cities and they have received quite a bit of rain and/or melting as the ski trail is solid ice.

Skate trails groomed this morning but snow is very wet and heavy, soupy in spots. Not great conditions, double the workout.

Good Spring skiing today at Tower Ridge. The skate lane was combed Thursday. The classic tracks are mature but in good condition. There is very little debris on the trail. Skin skis seem to work the best in the track but today fish scales would have been just fine. Picking the time of day is the key to really good Spring skiing. I've been going out at noon but mid morning until early evening would have been just fine.

Skate deck looked fantastic (maybe a bit soft) and grooming was happening as I arrived...but I only had classic skis. Tracks were very variable (as can probably be expected in March) and have not been set or groomed in a while. Spots that had experienced lots of thaw and freeze were quite icy. Shaded spots were good to very good with some powder in places. Not sure if any tracks were groomed/set after I left.
