Trail Detail
Notes
The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.Trail Reports

I skied from OO to Fire Tower. Nice spring skiing and clearly some work went into clearing the trail. There is still a lot of debris down, so do not bring good skis. The skate trail had fewer sections carpeted by pine needles then the classic. There was good coverage although I did seed two bare spots on the ski trail between OO and Boedecker. Still some wonderful skiing out there.

Strided in lightly snowed in tracks from Mosquito Brook to Fish Hatchery and back. Lots of tree icefall to ski under, over and around. Picked up and moved tree limbs that I could. Actually was a fun ski through beautiful ice covered woods. Good for double poling and scenery viewing. Looks like a couple folks tried skating through it all too. Skiing down B hill and around and through treefall nice challenge :).

Good news and bad news: The good news is that if you ever wanted to ski the birkie trail when it's not groomed, now is your chance. The bad news is that if you ever wanted to ski the birkie trail when it's not groomed you need to deal with downed trees and massive branches every 50 yards. The trail is in very very tough shape. We skied south of OO for a few kms. Two inches of fast new snow over the ice certainly helped but bring an extra set of gloves to remove debris because there's a lot of it.

I skated north from Hwy OO on the classic trail, which had been recently groomed and was lightly travelled. The skate deck was very firm. I used the classic tracks on some of the down-hills and they were in great shape with almost no leaves. I give it a 10.

Birkie Ridge: Skate skied on the Birkie's fresh fine double cord. Perfect. Classic tracks on both sides of the trail up to the loop. Loop tracked on one side.

I skated the loops south of Hwy OO. Despite recent grooming there's been a lot of skiing on the loops. Nevertheless, the skate deck is firm and fast and the classic tracks on both sides are in excellent shape. There are only a few leaves in the tracks. I give it a 9. I talked with another skier who said the main trails north and south haven't been groomed since the Birkebeiner race and are "choppy.".

Birkie Ridge: The Birkie trail report map shows Birkie Ridge groomed Feb 23 at 01:30. It is not groomed. Nice slow skiing on the EVOs though.

I skated from the Birkie trailhead at Cable, on the skate lane of the main trail. It had been groomed very recently, maybe this morning. The classic lane appeared to have older grooming. The course and tracks had very few leaves. I give it a 10.
