Notes

The famous Birkie trail. A great, rolling trail through the woods between Cable and Hayward. There is a short section south at Hwy OO that is lighted. There are snowmaking trails at the Start area.

I knew the conditions might be a little rough with the weather we've been experiencing, so I was going to go somewhere I knew had groomed. But, my Birchlegger friend wanted to ski the Birkie again today and what can I say the Birkie sobered me up and gave me my life back, so I love it here. Classic skied 30.4 km, 2 hours 13 minutes this late morning into the early afternoon. Bill skated 40 km and said it was dangerous. I'm sorry to say but due to the weather the tracks were terrible and very inconsistent in many places. Skied the classic trail to Fire Tower, tracks are mostly old, uneven, iciness wasn't a problem. After Fire Tower the tracks disappeared on the classic trail, a snowmobile had run over them. I wasted time checking out the skate trail south of Fire Tower and saw no tracks. I guess I'm lazy because I opted to stick with skiing areas with visual tracks. Skied Fire Tower back to Start in decent tracks. Looped it again because I was really hoping for a good long comfortable training ski. That being said it was a phenomenal technical ski. Good double poling most place. Got good work on my herringboning, hard packed hills, and soft in spots. Definitely skiing tomorrow, may not be here.

Skied out of our cabin at Roam Base Camp onto the Birkie trail at 32K. The trail was a super wide deck by all standards. The grooming is world class. However, be aware of tree litter in the areas of white pines...you will have to dance around to avoid hitting it. Over the course of three days I skated this mid section of both trails - what a treat. Kudos to all the Birkie groomers and staff.

Skate conditions very good as it looked like they groomed the skate deck the whole way. Some of the debris that fell because of the wind last Thursday was pretty well chewed up by the groomer. The classic track was another story. The only section we saw groomed was from Mosquito Brook south. That was excellent. Because they did not regroom the classic track south of OO and north of OO, it was very dirty from the debris. Classic skiers had to jump out of the track a great deal of the trail. Not much fun for classic skiers.

Kudos to the cru for grooming over 75k of trail this morning. We skate skied the trails by Telemark and World Cup trails (Mt Bauer in picture) and then the skate trail from Start to Lake Hayward. Start to fire tower was firmer since that had been groomed Thursday and the rest was like fresh snow - powdery soft but still plenty fast and fun. Swix TSP5 powder ran really nice the entire time as did Star polar powder. Tracks looked perfect too. Tomorrow should be another banner day. Thanks so much for your early morning and long hours of grooming for us to enjoy!

Beautiful day, skied OO to Hatchery. Only the first 2k and the section from mosquito brook to hatchery had been groomed since last night's 2 inch snow. The rest gradually got skied in. North of OO was groomed today as well.

I skated south from Hwy OO. The trail was freshly groomed for the first kilometer but beyond that there was 1 or 2 inches of snow on top of the last grooming. Nevertheless, skiing was great if perhaps a bit slow. The classic tracks on both sides had been used, so the new snow was pressed and the tracks looked good. I give it a 9.

I skated north from Hwy OO on the classic trail. The grooming was fresh (last night, maybe) and the trail was lightly used. There was no debris, even in the classic tracks, so conditions were almost perfect. I give it a 10.

Classic skied from Birkie Start to Hatchery Creek. Started out skiing the skate trail to get in the power line hills. The classic connector was not groomed. Skied the skate trail to Fire Tower. Tracks were exceptional: deep, firm, great glide, awesome kick. Switched the the classic trail at Fire Tower to OO. Tracks were freshly groomed on the left side, exceptional. The right side was old grooming: softer, shallower, washed out in areas. After the OO complex of trails the track was freshly groomed exceptionally on the left side. The right side track was iffy, washed out in places. After Mosquito Brook the track was set very close the the brush. Sticks hit me in the face and twigs poke through the snow hitting skis. They were very soft. In this section Fat Bikers zigzagged across the trail for a race. All in all it was a Phenomenal ski! 3 hours 10 minutes about. A great way to celebrate 5 years of sobriety. I recommend this ski for a meditative, motivational experience none can surmount. Thank you for everything groomers!

New snow, fresh grooming, west portion of trail. Too bad couldn't much use the classic trail between Hatchery Creek an Mosquito Brook. Grooming was set so the brush was almost constantly in your path. Almost un-skiable. Was better between Mosquito Brook and OO but still a significant issue in places. Not only inconvenient but a safety issue.

I skated north from Hatchery Creek, in the morning, before the temp got to 32. The trail had been heavily used, so the corduroy was gone. Still, it wasn't beat-up and the skiing was easy, with only a few twigs and leaves. The classic tracks (both sides) looked pretty good, despite a few oak leaves. I give it an 8.
