We skated and classic skied the blue trail around midday today. The tracks were a mix of ice and mush and we were the first on them for the day. The skate deck was fresh and we saw the groomer go by. The two big hills were a bit slick on the downhills. Timing is everything right now!

Out on my vintage woodies preparing for the wood ski rendezvous tomorrow at Spirit Mountain which is part of the DXC Nordic Spirit races. The groomer past me and the track and skate deck were both perfect which skiers come to expect on the Superior trails. They lit up the green and red trails this year for night skiing so we can enjoy these trails at night as well as during the day. Thank you Superior parks and rec for a great job!

After the snowfall on Thursday the trail conditions are absolutely spectacular. The red loop is great classic and good skating. No icy spots whatsoever. Just soft corduroy. The blue loop is also groomed but your skis will sink deep! It was still fun but much more of a workout on skate skis. There's some inconsistency with the snow depth, but I think that's expected after 10 in of snow. The grooming crew was out as soon as I finished up so I managed to get the last half mile of untouched corduroy. It's perfect conditions out in the municipal Forest right now.

A little bit of frozen/freezing mixed precipitation this morning followed by about 1/2" snow resulted in very good skate skiing. Hard, crusty base under this fresh topping is smooth but not slippery on push-off. Classic skiers reported good glide in the tracks, which were mostly set Friday. All the trails have similar conditions except the yellow, which has no classic track. Also, the hilly side hasn't been groomed since last Thursday's snowfall, and today's thin frozen crust over the 3" powder unfortunately has made it un-skiable.

Really nice conditions this morning. Groomed yesterday but not heavily used. Firm and fairly fast for the cold temps. Unfortunately, the hilly side of the yellow trail was not groomed and definitely not skiable via skate technique. The flat side was groomed and nice. Everything else was SMF quality nice grooming with little to no debris. The previously exposed icy/wet refrozen areas are now nicely covered up with the recent snow. Often stated and always meant- thanks SMF and City of Superior for your consistent grooming all winter.

I skate skied the Superior Municipal Forest trails today. The red, green, blue and inner purple trails were fully groomed and tracked! The outer purple and yellow trails weren't touched as of 3:00 PM this afternoon. Trail conditions were excellent due to the new snow we received and there was absolutely no debris. The snow was a bit slow and soft in some areas and pole plants on the inner purple were a bit soft, too. Skiing was very smooth overall and it was great not to have any ice on the trails.

We just skied the red and green in Superior. When we left Duluth there were very light flurries and the wind was just kinda blowing. When we arrived in Superior it was like a blizzard! High winds blowing the heavily falling snow sideways! The snow was falling so hard and fast that we were unable to see the tracks in many places including on the red where the others with us had just been over shortly before. We were thankful for the fluffy snow because it appeared to be kinda icy underneath and the tracks were still the old ones due to the light equipment they work with and the lack of snow. We saw the groomer coming in as we were leaving. We had great glide!

We skate skied the red trail and it's in great condition considering all that warm weather and rain without fresh snow on top. They all were freshly groomed today, hardly any debris and fast. Thanks! Superior, for frequently grooming.

I skated this afternoon and the conditions were super fast! I averaged 9-mph and wasn't even putting forth much of an effort! The groomers have not re-tracked any of the classic tracks in a week. They are way too hard to do anything to them. We either need more snow or warmer temperatures to loosen them up. I classic skied yesterday and mostly double poled the entire time. It was hard to actually classic ski, because of the speed. Skating was a mixed bag today. The first part and the last part of red was great. The middle portion was very icy. The outer green was great and groomed today. The inner green was groomed yesterday and was sketchy fast! The inner purple was groomed today and was the best skate deck in the entire system. Outer purple, yellow and blue are very rough, according to the groomers. Hopefully, the warmer weekend temperatures will loosen up the snow. The groomers have done an excellent job with the poor conditions they've had to deal with lately. I guess the best way to describe the skiing was "defensive" skiing.

I classic skied with my new skin skis today. I wanted to see how they would do in icy conditions as I've never skied skins before in these conditions. It was actually great. The green and red trails were surprisingly in good condition and not very icy. Green was a bit better than red, however. I skied the inner purple trail and it was very poor, because it's mostly in the open. The sun and rain raised havoc with that trail. The tracks were mostly washed out and very icy. I avoided all the hills today, except two smaller ones on green, as a precaution, and kept to the flats and small rollers and didn't have any issues. The skate deck and tracks are very firm and you won't cause any trail damage skiing on them. There are no soft spots. Superior got zero snow and we had rain all day yesterday! The worst part are the parking lots! They are extremely icy and dangerous and you need to tip toe across them. Good news: The city crew installed a new solar light at the 42nd St. parking lot today. That will be a welcome addition to the skiing experience.
